Police say NY teen killed dad after ATM card fight

TROY, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a 17-year-old upstate New York girl has aimed a rifle at her father’s head and killed him after the two argued over his ATM card.

The Times Union of Albany reports that Trinity Copeland confessed the shooting to investigators.

The newspaper says Trinity called 911 early Friday to report that her father, Harlan Copeland, had been shot in his Troy apartment.

The newspaper says the teen told police that her father ordered her to kill him -- or he would kill them both.

Trinity was arraigned on second-degree murder charges.

I posted the excerpt because it seemed no one else read that far.

Her father threatened her and she killed him. Wouldn't that qualify as "Stand Your Ground"?

at the very least, it's self defense. As far as I know, NY has no SYG laws so that point is moot.

..the answer is rather obvious. Of course, that requires you to actually read and educate yourself on the subject and I'm well aware that is asking a lot of you....

Please share your "better understanding" of the law and give your opinion. She was threatened by her father and killed him. Would that qualify as "Stand Your Ground"?

It is inside the home, that alone makes SYG irrelevant. To answer your question, it depends on what the detailed evidence showed based on the "reasonable man" standard.

There is no evidence she was threatened. She used a RIFLE which is not something easily or usually carried on one's person for self-defense purposes. Which means she would have had to leave the situation, get the rifle, then deliberately point it at him and pull the trigger. Not a SYG situation which is obvious to anyone with a luke warm education on the topic.

Think.

...by properly imitating the thread you started with some commentary. You don't walk up to a group at a party, drop a newspaper article at their feet and walk away do you? Well, maybe you do and I shouldn't expect better I guess...

for becoming a parent.

When you look at the societal harm caused by irresponsible, untrained, and generally unfit people being allowed to reproduce (sometimes as many as *8* per gestation!) it becomes obvious that unlicensed reproduction is not something we can allow to continue.
