Customers disarmed Fred Meyer gunman

PORTLAND – A man accused of shooting another customer Tuesday during an altercation inside a Clackamas Fred Meyer was booked into jail and his concealed handgun permit revoked, according to sheriff's deputies.

A verbal argument started just after 3:30 p.m. and quickly turned into a physical fight at the checkout counter of the store, located near Interstate 205 and Highway 212, according to Sgt. Adam Phillips of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

A witness told KGW his family was in line when a man behind them tried to look at their PIN number as it was being entered. The fight quickly escalated and the suspect shot the victim, 59-year-old William Young of Milwaukie, in the leg.

Fred Meyer officials said other store customers helped to take down and disarm the shooting suspect, later identified as 66-year-old Jerry T. Harryman of Milwaukie.

Do they do direct deposit? Is it by the post or by the word?

None of the regular pro-RKBA posters have claimed that CCWers never go bad. A few do go bad, but very, very few

Only that they hardly ever do so, and are less likely to do so than people without CCW permits.

What is your weapon?
Your weapon, man. Your weapon.
What keeps you alive and makes the other guy die?
What is your weapon?
lt's your brain, Mr. Pike.
Your noggin. Your noodle. Your smarts. Your gray matter.
Your poise under fire.
Your wits, when all about you are losing theirs.
I think you came to this party unarmed, Mr. Pike.

commits a crime with his weapon. Fortunately it is rare.

Using Florida as an example, the state has issued a total of 2,246,827 concealed weapons permits since October 1, 1987 and currently 963,512 are valid. During that 25 year period of time only 168 carry permits have been revoked for a crime involving the use of a firearm after the license was issued. Not all of those cases involved a shooting. Those that did were indeed tragic.

While this is only anecdotal evidence, I personally know of three incidents in Florida in which a person with a carry permit was able to stop an attack from an armed dangerous individual who intended to rob, seriously injure or kill them. No shots were fired.

It does serve your cause to report on incidents in which a carry permit misused his weapon but it ignores the fact that overall "shall issue" concealed carry has proven successful and beneficial to many.
