Rent.com surveyed parents about their attitudes on raising kids in the city. Taking these parental concerns into consideration, Rent.com has chosen 10 cities that stand out as great places to raise kids.
Rent.com evaluated the top 50 rental markets based on the cost of living, violent crime rate and graduation rate, in order to identify 10 cities where parents can raise a child with peace of mind. Cost of living, crime rate and graduation rate were ranked against the national average, and crime rate was weighted double relative to other statistics, based on the overwhelming response from parents that safety is a top priority. The following places are all wonderful choices for parents looking to raise their kids in the city (not ranked in order):
Austin, Texas
Columbus, Ohio
Dallas, Texas
Denver, Colo.
Omaha, Neb.
Phoenix, Ariz.
Portland, Ore.
San Diego, Calif.
San Jose, Calif
Seattle, Wash.
Frequently we hear from antis that they will never come to Texas, or that Texas would be a horrible place to raise kids based on our gun-friendly laws. We hear the same stuff from antis about other gun-friendly states such as Arizona.
I believe that Rent.com is neutral about states gun laws so their rating would not be directly influenced by gun laws. However they did give crime rates double ranking due to parent's stated concerns about child safety. All states except California are shall-issue states. So being a gun-friendly state doesn't seem to hurt an objective appraisal of their livability for kids.

(17,865 posts)lived in a northern suburb in Dallas for five years. They hated it. They have since moved to Iowa City, IA and love it (they are both Iowans). In order of cities in which they lived: Iowa City, Boston, St. Louis, and Dallas.

(32,706 posts)"Texas would be a horrible place to raise kids based on our gun-friendly laws.", could you post a link to where any member of DU ever said such a thing. Being said so frequently said, you should have no problem pointing out 30,20 or even once it was said here. If not, isn't a statement like that called a "straw man"?

(12,072 posts)I have run across the sentiment by antis in responses inside of threads, usually not in their post title. I haven't kept a list, but just for you I will start keeping such a list and in a few months will post it, with this thread as a reminder for you.

(32,706 posts)exact quotes within. "Texas would be a horrible place to raise kids based on our gun-friendly laws." When that quote in put in, it only leads to YOUR post, even though it is not in title of your post. I call "pants on fire", straw man and completely made up bull crap.

(32,706 posts)Every state in the union gets put down at some time or another. The only time I ever saw hate for a state's gun laws being to liberal was about Florida, and I didn't hear a lot of whining like you are doing. I have heard much more bigotry about gun laws directed toward Chicago and DC, yet never hear them whine like you either. We can see where the real regional bigotry is directed, toward large cities with many black people that vote for politicians that represent their views.

Similar stuff gets said about Texas quite frequently here on D.U.

Kind of like republicans twisting Obamas words on "you didn't build it".
GreenStormCloud
(12,072 posts)In context that post was a slam at Texas, based on gun rights.
safeinOhio
(32,706 posts)"Texas would be a horrible place to raise kids based on our gun-friendly laws." The poster said nothing about gun rights in the states he liked and didn't like. The states he liked, like Iowa have "shall issue" laws too. Where did he mention gun rights in his choice of states? Actually, Texas is much more restrictive than Vermont and that state was not even mentioned. With your paranoid logic, it should way our rate Texas. Your bullshit post said it is "frequently said" which turns out to be a big fat lie. It is never said on the internet, let alone DU, except the one time YOU said it.
So, did you run a sub 3 hour marathon too?

(32,706 posts)of regional bigotry toward Chicago and DC posted by you and your friends. Are you sure you want to go there?
GreenStormCloud
(12,072 posts)Dallas did. Eight of the cities on the list are in gun friendly states.
Remember, my point is that Rental.com (Assumed to be gun neutral) placed double emphasis on safety, yet still rated eight of our cities as tops.

(17,671 posts)but I wouldn't live in Texas if I had to shoot my way to the street to make a beer run where I live now. I wouldn't even consider it until they put tail gunners on bread trucks.
But I get your point though.

(6,801 posts)they have very strict gun laws.
For some reason that doesn't translate to being particularly safe.
