And when he has talked about the matter, it is often not a full-throated push for specific laws to deal with some of the problems but rather an acknowledgement that more can be done and that the country needs a new discussion or an honest and open conversation about firearms.
That call for an open and honest conversation on firearms is part of the draft 2012 Democratic National Convention gun control platform. As weve said before, platforms are mostly the work of party activists and arent binding for the partys standard-bearer. Yet platforms do show a partys values.
For some Democrats, this gun-control platform is falling short. Set for a final vote of delegates this week, the platform is being reamed as being too timid.

(17,493 posts)Unfortunately for those who strongly support gun control it would require "honesty."
For example an honest discussion of another assault weapons ban (which is mentioned in the Democratic platform) would have to admit that rifles that would qualify as assault weapons are basically no different mechanically than common semi-automatic rifles commonly used by hunters and target shooters for decades and are rarely used to commit murder. They are not assault rifles used by military forces in many nations which have the capacity for fully automatic or burst fire. They may look very similar to such weapons but are merely crippled clones.
The side that supports gun control might point out that a semi-automatic rifle with a 20 or 30 round magazine is possibly more deadly in the hands of an experienced shooter than a fully automatic rifle. That is indeed a fair point but rarely mentioned by those who support such a ban.
However "black rifles" are rarely used to commit violence and they are indeed used for target shooting and hunting. Any honest debate should recognize this fact.
Also an honest debate would require that the gun control side should admit that the current level of firearm violence has deceased to levels last seen in the late 60s.
I feel it would be beneficial to better enforce existing firearm laws and to increase penalties for the straw purchase of firearms and the smuggling of such weapons. We could also improve the NICS background check system by requiring states to more timely input data about those who have a criminal record or have been adjudged as having severe mental issues. This is the current law but might require the federal government to provide the necessary funds to the states to accomplish this task.
I also belive that it would be very difficult but possible to require a background check for all sales of firearms including private transactions if the cost was reasonable. This would do far more than merely eliminating the "gun show loophole."
I feel that in order to have a productive discussion on the issue of gun control it is necessary for both sides to stop insulting each other. Secondly both sides have to be willing to compromise. Unfortunately compromise is a lost art in our nation.
We can make headway on reducing gun violence in our nation if both sides work with each other. Sadly I feel that this is unlikely at this time.

(12,072 posts)He wants:
A ban on large quanities of online ammo sales.
Reporting to law enforcement of bulk sales of ammo.
Federal licensing or registration of gun owners.
Not gonna happen. The platform goes too far in appeasing the gun controllers already.

(88 posts)Because in a close race, gun control is a losing proposition for Democrats. There is already a horrible misconception that Democrats are all a bunch of gun grabbers and the only party that will look out for gun owners is the repubs.
There are so many problems with that perception that I won't get into them now.
President Obama needs to focus on jobs, food prices and keeping us out of war in Iran if he wants to win. All gun-control will do is help hand the White House, the House and the Senate over to the repubs.

(3,291 posts)The anti 2A people will have to learn that the pro 2A people have an equal voice. Statistics and evidence show that the past laws have not worked and it's time to stop including bogus crap in the party platform. There are important issues to be addressed.
