Home invasion leads to fatal gunfight

He then heard noise in his garage, and when he saw the two men walk into his house, he shot at both. At least one of them returned fire and shot him in the face.

Police found one of the suspects — believed to be in his late teens or 20s — dead in the garage. The other was flown to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest, police Sgt. J.R. Fiste said at the scene.

...

“I didn't even know he had a gun. I didn't even think he was capable of shooting a gun,” said one neighbor, Rosalba Fletcher. “Good for him. He could have been dead.”

Yes, good for him for being aware and prepared and armed. It's much better than being dead.

I hope more criminals will start to realize what the neighbor did: Even though someone might not look capable of shooting a gun, it's very possible that they are indeed capable--and willing to do so to protect themselves or their family.

I suppose some will bemoan this as Castle Doctrine Murder.

Those men had the best of intentions. They were, we may be sure, only there for stuff.

In civilized society, we must assume that two men, armed with a rifle and invading a home, are model citizens. No one knows what would have happened had the homeowner not recklessly escalated the situation and resorted to violence. To assume ill intent on the part of armed home invaders is barbaric.

The gentlemen (we mustn't use derogatory terms like "goblin"--that's just dehumanizing) had probably just been hunting or target shooting and got confused trying to make it to a friend's house.

The homeowner, on the other hand, sounds like a lunatic. He lived in a "residential neighborhood" where "violent crime is rare"--so what was he doing with a gun?!!! It stinks of paranoia and right wing douchbaggery.

And if that's not suspicious enough, he "works at a laboratory" and "is pursuing a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering." He's one of those people who advertises falsely--the neighbors were surprised that he had a gun or that he was capable of handling one. That's entrapment--looking all geeky and intellectual, then dropping the hammer on those fine gentlemen!

To paranoia and entrapment, we must add cowardice and probably inadequacy--if you know what I mean. What was he compensating for with that shotgun? And why was he afraid to take on two armed men in hand to rifle combat? I've seen an 89 lb anorexic teenaged girl make two Navy Seals cry using just pressure points and some martial arts techniques she learned on the internet. And the Seals had full battle gear, including submachineguns. Whats wrong with this wimp?

Lastly, this guy was obviously bloodthirsty. Instead of a friendly greeting, or even a polite request that his guests leave, he jumps right to lethal force. He kills one gentlemen and forces the other one to resort to REAL, LEGITIMATE self-defense. The thing to do would have been to lay down his shotgun (or not have picked it up in the first place), ask the men to leave, ask for mercy, pray for the best, and if it came to it, beg for a quick and merciful death. That's how they do it in Canada and England--civilized.

I'm starting a legal fund to help the surviving home invader sue this bastard. Won't you make a donation? Dial 1 900 U R AN ASS to donate.

If we raise enough money, maybe the Brady Campaign, MMM, MAIG and VPC will join the cause. Someone has to stand up for civilization. Do it for the children!

I know several of them are "staying" on the old guns forum site, since most of us left it they are congratulating themselves. It's pretty funny not to mention telling as the only way they can win the discussion is to have no opposition.

Plus a few have had juries can their stuff over here and resent allowing mere fellow DU members to hide their long, boring, and generally irrelevant posts.

Maybe they are just too busy congratulating themselves to even bother coming here and correcting all the misperceptions of these fine young men, cut down in their prime, just as they were turning their lives around.

(Very well done TPaine7)

It probably wasn't even a true assault rifle, but instead a semi-auto.

Remember you fight with your pistol to get to the rifle/shotgun.

I have a keltec sub2000 as my HD firearm if for some reason my HD pistols won't do the trick. I sure don't have time to fetch one of the AR's out of the safe.

I keep the sub under the bed in a locked endo box so it would still be several seconds before I could put it into action.

Right now I'm looking for a new HD pistol in the 45 or 40 flavor. Such a tough decision...Maybe a revolver since I only have one revolver in my inventory (and I've never shot it since getting it in 1986)

What you should be getting out of the story is that the particular individual wielding the rifle (not an "assault rifle", as it isn't select-fire or full auto) is not very good with his weapon. His ability to successfully fight with a rifle has nothing to do with the abilities of millions of Americans, both privately and professionally, to use a rifle effectively in a fight.
