Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumWhy I Carry A Gun
I carry at work because my employer requires it.
Kind of hard to be an armed security guard without a gun.
So, that would be one reason.
My wife carries a concealed hand gun everywhere she legally can because she is 60 years old and arthritic and is not going to have any chance if she is ever attacked (key word coming up) again.
At her age and physical condition people see her as an easy mark.
So, that's another reason.
I carry a hand gun (off shift) because I've been attacked as well.
I was at work (unarmed duty) one night and some guy walked up to me asking for directions to some bar. Security isnt law enforcement; a big portion of what we do is customer service. I had no legal authority to tell the man to stop or not to approach me any further and I had no real reason to because he looked normal.
When he got about five feet away he started screaming that he'd done two tours in Afghanistan so that fat fucks like me could by cheap gas (not that I didn't feel some sympathy for his position) and I found myself in a fight with a drunk maniac half my age and twice my fitness level.
While I was fighting him off with one hand and getting my OC spray out with the other (no hands left for the radio) he broke my nose and cracked two of my teeth (I spent a year going back and forth to a doctor and an endodontist for the dental implants and the deviated septum.)
Now I'm sure that you will point out that the attack arose directly from my job and you would be right.
That doesn't change the fact that people like that exist in our world and they really don't give a fuck how you feel about guns.
As a result of that attack I've increased my fitness level, I work out, I walk several miles every day at work, I lift weights but the fact is I'm too old to survive another attack like that. I very likely wouldn't have survived that one had I not sprayed half a can up Fox Labs right up that guy's nose. IMO the only reason I was able to stay on my feet and in the fight is because I had previous boxing experience
I sure as hell can't pay for the medical bills resulting from such an attack, my employer's insurance paid up wards of 70 thousand dollars to get my face fixed, that's almost 3 years salary for me.
I can't go through that again
thats why I carry a gun

(16,064 posts)the only reason to carry a gun is because you intend to use it to kill someone. Rationalize all you want but that is what comes down to.

(609 posts)I don't have seat belts in my car because I INTEND to crash. I don't have a smoke alarm in my house because I INTEND to have a house fire. It is good to be prepared for these events, in case they were to happen though.
If you want peace, prepare for war.

(950 posts)my employer requires that I carry a firearm at work everyday they also pay me a 3.00 differential for doing so.
I don't know about you but I can't afford to turn down either the job or the extra 120.00$ a week (that's my gas bill to and from for a month)

(10,136 posts)Unfortunately, we live in a society where the shooting of an attacker is not always a bad thing. Sometimes they die, sometimes they don't.

(3,419 posts)the kind of mentality we put up with in here. Now you are saying that I want to murder someone because I carry a gun everyday. How sad. I really do feel sorry for you.

(17,493 posts)from a person who intends to seriously injure or kill me.
Obviously if I only wished to kill someone with my handgun I would just walk down any street and pick a victim to blow away.
If I ever have to shoot an attacker who intends to seriously injure or kill me, it is possible that he might die. This would be unfortunate.
I also have no desire to ever have to shoot another person - period. That's why I practice situational awareness which simply means that I am alert to my surroundings and do not walk down dark streets with a cell phone glued to my ear.
I realize that often a person that shoots another individual even in legitimate self defense suffers long term psychological problems. Currently I sleep well at night and have no wish to have to endure nightmares caused by my actions even if they were entirely justified.

(950 posts)Did you not note that even while being attacked I was able to draw the weapon I had and use it effectively?
I stopped the guy from killing me with OC spray if I had a gun back then i would have shot him several times

(4,569 posts)Your OC spray caused a different effect that a gun would have.....the spray saved your life. A gun would have either gotten you killed or in jail, where you would be killed..........

(827 posts)Perhaps I should disarm while on duty if you know thats how it works.
You have experience in this I assume? Or perhaps you are some kind of expert in a relevant field?

(950 posts)First I want to make sure that you clearly understand the situation.
You do understand that I was working as a licensed security guard at the time this incident occurred right?
This is key because had I been carrying a gun it would not have been concealed I would have been carrying it openly on a duty belt.
More like a gun would have caused a different effect than the OC spray, for one thing it is (IMO) highly unlikely the guy would have approached or attacked me if I had been obviously armed with a gun as opposed to OC spray.
As for the effects of shooting him versus OC spray my duty pistol now is a S&W 6906 and I carry Winchester Ranger (Same Exact Things) Ts all other things being equal my first shot would have hit him right under his nose at about six inches distance do you really think hed have continued the fight after that ?
You will get no argument from me on that
How? Please answer specifically.
Remember what I said earlier about the fact that I am a licensed security guard being a key point? Let me explain, I actually do this (willingly or not) for a living I am well trained and I understand Colorado law on both use of force and deadly force in self defense very well.
Let me break it down, as a licensed guard I am only required to use the use of force continuum( Physical presence, body posture, verbal commands, physical force, deadly force) until you actually attack me. Once you attack me I do not have to respond to your attack with commensurate force. IOW if you punch me I dont have to fist fight you I can respond immediately with deadly force especially against a younger and stronger opponent.
The fact that I wasn't charged with aggravated battery for OCing the guy is a fairly good indicator that (assuming I was authorized to be carrying a firearm at all) I wouldn't have been charged for shooting the guy
Not worth a response

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, I always say!

armueller2001
(609 posts)of a violent attack. Unfortunately, your experiences aren't universal and many people aren't so lucky. Personally, that's not a lottery I'd like to take my chances on. I also value my family's lives and I feel it is irresponsible not to have the means to protect them effectively.
Thousands of people use firearms to defend themselves every year from assault, rape, and murder. No one is saying people need to carry, only that they need to have the choice for themselves to make.

(35,528 posts)parinoid. The county I live in has about 85,000 resedents and probably 9 out of 10 houses have guns. There are less than 2000 people that have CCW and
most I know rarely carry.

(609 posts)Just like it's paranoid to buckle your seat belt when you get in the car, or to have smoke alarms in your house?
There's a difference between prepared and paranoid.

(827 posts)ive never been in an accident but ive been close a few times and thankful for having it. My job often requires aggressive driving and several people ive worked with say they dont wear one becaue they would rather be thrown clear of an accident, or claim a vest will save them.
They are fantastic in accidents too, but no substitute for a belt.
I also have had three car fires. Two have been serious and involved burns. I keep an extinguisher in my personal car and of course the work vehicles are required to have them.
Having them and needing them are different things entirely.

(17,493 posts)or someone who has a significant physical advantage over you, you will regret the fact that you left your firearm behind in your home safe.
You probably will feel like a total fool.
I should also point out that predators often pick the young or the old and infirm from a herd as their victims. You may have reached 65 without ever needing a firearm for self defense but that is no guarantee that you might not need one tomorrow or at some time in the future.
Admittedly the chances are slim but not nonexistent.
But those who needed one but did not have it are a little bit too dead to post.

(950 posts)How very fucking progressive of you
Do you think Im a security guard (one of the least respected professions on the planet) by choice?
Do you think I woke up one morning and said Ya know Ive been a machinist for almost 7 years, I make good money , I get all the overtime I can handle; yeah fuck that I want to go be a 9 dollar an hour security guard. Or did you forget that manufacturing fucking died when the economy tanked?
I was lucky; I was only out of work for about 5 months before I took this job. I got to keep my house ( I cant afford to heat it but at least I get to live in it) I have a steady job, my previous job no longer exists or if it does someone in China is doing it.
And you want me to Move somewhere I wont get mugged.?
Do you tell homeless people to "get a job." too?

Just because someone doesn't fantasize about guns twenty four seven don't make you and idiot. I am not scared to go outside my house without packing a gun, you guys should build a bunker to hide in. I have had guns probably as long if not longer than you, I have a CCW but I don't pack a gun every time I leave my yard.
Berserker
(3,419 posts)Please that's the only reason you are here. You have had guns longer that me? Oh Really I have had guns for 53 years can you top that? I have never had to use one in self defense and I hope I never have to.
Please don't post bullshit posts pretending you know me that's really lame and people can see through it.

(35,528 posts)about 10-12 years old don't remember exactly so that makes us about equal. I am a veteran and also never used a gun in self defence. I don't claim to know you but at our age the odds are most people on DU are younger. I stick by my statement that OPs like this one are intended as flame bait. It seems like every day one shows up and the same people always come out of the woodwork and gang up on anyone that doesn't support their pro-gun agenda.
