Why I Carry A Gun

I carry at work because my employer requires it.
Kind of hard to be an armed security guard without a gun.
So, that would be one reason.

My wife carries a concealed hand gun everywhere she legally can because she is 60 years old and arthritic and is not going to have any chance if she is ever attacked (key word coming up) again.

At her age and physical condition people see her as an easy mark.

So, that's another reason.

I carry a hand gun (off shift) because I've been attacked as well.

I was at work (unarmed duty) one night and some guy walked up to me asking for directions to some bar. Security isn’t law enforcement; a big portion of what we do is customer service. I had no legal authority to tell the man to stop or not to approach me any further and I had no real reason to because he looked normal.

When he got about five feet away he started screaming that he'd done two tours in Afghanistan so that fat fucks like me could by cheap gas (not that I didn't feel some sympathy for his position) and I found myself in a fight with a drunk maniac half my age and twice my fitness level.

While I was fighting him off with one hand and getting my OC spray out with the other (no hands left for the radio) he broke my nose and cracked two of my teeth (I spent a year going back and forth to a doctor and an endodontist for the dental implants and the deviated septum.)

Now I'm sure that you will point out that the attack arose directly from my job and you would be right.

That doesn't change the fact that people like that exist in our world and they really don't give a fuck how you feel about guns.

As a result of that attack I've increased my fitness level, I work out, I walk several miles every day at work, I lift weights but the fact is I'm too old to survive another attack like that. I very likely wouldn't have survived that one had I not sprayed half a can up Fox Labs right up that guy's nose. IMO the only reason I was able to stay on my feet and in the fight is because I had previous boxing experience

I sure as hell can't pay for the medical bills resulting from such an attack, my employer's insurance paid up wards of 70 thousand dollars to get my face fixed, that's almost 3 years salary for me.

I can't go through that again

that’s why I carry a gun

from a person who intends to seriously injure or kill me.

Obviously if I only wished to kill someone with my handgun I would just walk down any street and pick a victim to blow away.

If I ever have to shoot an attacker who intends to seriously injure or kill me, it is possible that he might die. This would be unfortunate.

I also have no desire to ever have to shoot another person - period. That's why I practice situational awareness which simply means that I am alert to my surroundings and do not walk down dark streets with a cell phone glued to my ear.

I realize that often a person that shoots another individual even in legitimate self defense suffers long term psychological problems. Currently I sleep well at night and have no wish to have to endure nightmares caused by my actions even if they were entirely justified.

First I want to make sure that you clearly understand the situation.

You do understand that I was working as a licensed security guard at the time this incident occurred right?

This is key because had I been carrying a gun it would not have been concealed I would have been carrying it openly on a duty belt.

Your OC spray caused a different effect that a gun would have

More like a gun would have caused a different effect than the OC spray, for one thing it is (IMO) highly unlikely the guy would have approached or attacked me if I had been obviously armed with a gun as opposed to OC spray.

As for the effects of shooting him versus OC spray my duty pistol now is a S&W 6906 and I carry Winchester Ranger (Same Exact Things) Ts all other things being equal my first shot would have hit him right under his nose at about six inches distance do you really think he’d have continued the fight after that ?

the spray saved your life

You will get no argument from me on that

A gun would have either gotten you killed

How? Please answer specifically.

or in jail,

Remember what I said earlier about the fact that I am a licensed security guard being a key point? Let me explain, I actually do this (willingly or not) for a living I am well trained and I understand Colorado law on both use of force and deadly force in self defense very well.

Let me break it down, as a licensed guard I am only required to use the use of force continuum( Physical presence, body posture, verbal commands, physical force, deadly force) until you actually attack me. Once you attack me I do not have to respond to your attack with commensurate force. IOW if you punch me I don’t have to fist fight you I can respond immediately with deadly force especially against a younger and stronger opponent.

The fact that I wasn't charged with aggravated battery for OCing the guy is a fairly good indicator that (assuming I was authorized to be carrying a firearm at all) I wouldn't have been charged for shooting the guy

where you would be killed..........

Not worth a response

of a violent attack. Unfortunately, your experiences aren't universal and many people aren't so lucky. Personally, that's not a lottery I'd like to take my chances on. I also value my family's lives and I feel it is irresponsible not to have the means to protect them effectively.

Thousands of people use firearms to defend themselves every year from assault, rape, and murder. No one is saying people need to carry, only that they need to have the choice for themselves to make.

ive never been in an accident but ive been close a few times and thankful for having it. My job often requires aggressive driving and several people ive worked with say they dont wear one becaue they would rather be thrown clear of an accident, or claim a vest will save them.

They are fantastic in accidents too, but no substitute for a belt.

I also have had three car fires. Two have been serious and involved burns. I keep an extinguisher in my personal car and of course the work vehicles are required to have them.

Having them and needing them are different things entirely.

You probably will feel like a total fool.

I should also point out that predators often pick the young or the old and infirm from a herd as their victims. You may have reached 65 without ever needing a firearm for self defense but that is no guarantee that you might not need one tomorrow or at some time in the future.

Admittedly the chances are slim but not nonexistent.

Do you think I’m a security guard (one of the least respected professions on the planet) by choice?

Do you think I woke up one morning and said “Ya know I’ve been a machinist for almost 7 years, I make good money , I get all the overtime I can handle; yeah fuck that I want to go be a 9 dollar an hour security guard.” Or did you forget that manufacturing fucking died when the economy tanked?

I was lucky; I was only out of work for about 5 months before I took this job. I got to keep my house ( I can’t afford to heat it but at least I get to live in it) I have a steady job, my previous job no longer exists or if it does someone in China is doing it.

And you want me to “Move somewhere I won’t get mugged.”?

Do you tell homeless people to "get a job." too?
