SPRINGFIELD Theres not enough support in the Illinois Senate to impose tough new restrictions on semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.
In a setback for gun-control advocates in the wake of the killings of school children in Connecticut, the Illinois Senate was poised to adjourn Thursday without voting on two pieces of legislation aimed at limiting access to certain kinds of weapons and bullets.
Although the two proposals could emerge again when the legislature reconvenes next week, the lack of action shows the General Assembly remains divided on how to balance Second Amendment issues...
Hmmm, can't get a ban through the overwhelmingly Democratic legislature of what is
arguably the most antigun state in the US?
Cue the acting out in 3...2...1...

You fear successful gun laws, cause it will prove you wrong.
You fear any psychological checks for gun ownership because it would expose you for a coward.
You fear the bogey man.
You fear the government of We The People, because you are a coward.
Face it gun nuts, you are a coward.

(7,776 posts)Really?
So, when the legislature of a State one is not a resident of enacts laws (or attempts to enact), that are unconstitutional and/or unworkable, the only people who should be concerned and/or take interest should be residents of that State?
Really... really?
Setback for bid to legalize gay marriage in Illinois, but Senate could vote Thursday
SPRINGFIELD A bid to legalize gay marriage in Illinois suffered an unexpected setback Wednesday when supporters fell two votes shy of getting the legislative hearing they wanted, meaning no Senate vote on the measure until Thursday at the earliest.
The 28-24 procedural vote showed the razor-thin margins surrounding the contentious issue and clearly caught backers off-guard, thwarting their plan to advance the measure to the Senate floor Wednesday night.

(6,185 posts)Every weekend target shooters from the range in Bonfield get in their 4 door sedans and minivans as a group and drive in from the Kankakee area to shoot up the streets of Chicago with their tricked out AR-15, M1 Garand and '03 Springfield target rifles.
Father "Flaky" Pfleger has been trying to get video of it for proof, but keeps getting local neighborhood "sports clubs" on camera instead.

I would hate to live in Illinois and try to argue that your state's gun laws are working so well that they should be a model for the nation. Perhaps if I were you, I would also call gun owners cowards and fearful of the bogey man.
But if I did live in Illinois and wished to defend my state's gun laws I would point out the following:
1) Most of Illinois is a very safe place to live.
2) Chicago is the hot spot for gun violence and the majority is the result of turf warfare between competing drug gangs. Mexican drug cartels sponsor and encourage the gang warfare in Chicago as it is centrally located and they wish to use it as a hub for their drug trade. Excluding this violence, Chicago is a nice place to live.
3) The ease of smuggling firearms to the inner streets of Chicago is largely due to lax laws in other states.
4) Chicago has always had and still has problems with corruption in the city government and the police force and this hampers efforts to curb gang violence.
5) If the United States were to drop its failed War on Drugs, violence would decrease in Chicago.
Finally I would back up all these statements with facts and statistics.
See, it is not all that hard to present a good argument for the gun laws in your state without using unnecessary insults. Such a post might actually promote a productive discussion which is becoming increasingly rare on the gun control issue on DU.

(17,493 posts)and you continue to insult me.
If you seriously believe that your tactic is effective I can only point out that I have a thick skin and I actually enjoy truly original insults but find tired worn out insults somewhat boring. Come up with something new and different and I will congratulate you.
One of the most discouraging changes in our nation that I have observed over my 66 years of existence is that our nation and Congress has been divided into two separate camps on most issues. In the last several decades these two camps have both decided that they are absolutely right and the other side is composed of fools and idiots or evil people who wish to destroy our country.
Instead of sitting down at a table to hash out differences our elected officials in Congress merely play political games in hope of winning a majority of seats in the next election. If a workable solution to a problem is proposed by one side, the other will do their best to sabotage it even though they may propose the same idea in the future in which case the favor will be returned.
The same hatred seems to be apparent on Main Street and most people simple love to insult those they disagree with rather than try to solve our serious problems. While it is great fun, insults rarely lead to compromise which is a lost art in our nation.
But still if you enjoy insulting others as perhaps it makes you feel superior then continue to do so. Don't expect me to insult you in return as I don't play that game.

(4,757 posts)but then again reality does not come in any gun nut argument.
Like guns save lives, or gun makes us safe.
If guns make us safe, why do we have the most gun crimes and violent crimes in the westernized nations.
We have the most guns of any nation. That should make us the SAFEST nation.
But we are not.
Reality catch it.

No. That caveat was there so we are not compared to third world nations.

(17,502 posts)what difference does economics make? I have yet to hear any explanation.
Yeah. Long story short,
Out of the OCED countries, the US is third in murder
UK is first in assault
Australia is first in rape
Belgium is first in robbery
Denmark is first in burglary

(594 posts)Looks like there are enough sensible Illinois Democrats who realize such ridiculous restrictions would not have any measurable effect gun crime, and that the state would lose lots of quality jobs as several firearm manufacturers took their business elsewhere.
THAT is a resalable and sensible decision.

(18,482 posts)If the control enthusiasts can invent the term "assault weapon", is there a specific reason not to further customize terminology so as to favorably enhance one's own side of the debate?
I suggest that from now on ammo bans be referred to as "emo bans", not to be confused with the sound alike term "Emo bands".
