Air Force and Boeing near deal for presidential airplanes that were once destined for Russia

The Air Force is close to awarding a contract to purchase two Boeing 747s once destined for Russia to serve as the future Air Force One presidential airplane.
Were working through the final stages of coordination to purchase two commercial 747-8 aircraft and expect to award a contract soon, said Ann Stefanek, Air Force deputy chief of media operations.
Details regarding the cost of the plane are still being finalized, with an announcement slated this week. News of the negotiations was reported earlier by the trade publication Defense One; it was confirmed Tuesday by the Air Force.
Were still working toward a deal to provide two 747-8s to the Air Force were really focused on providing a great value for the Air Force and the best price for the taxpayer, Boeing spokeswoman Caroline Hutcheson said in a statement.

(5,477 posts)the majority of the cost of these aircraft is the various changes and enhancements; putting into place armor, security infrastructure, countermeasures, EMP protection, mid-air refueling capability, etc., and a lot of those things are normally put into place while the airframes are being initially constructed. Saving money by purchasing ready-built airframes creates a lot more labor cost for deconstruction and rebuilding of large sections of the aircraft, in addition to the specialized equipment...essentially turning them into huge kits of parts and building them again to meet the requirements of these aircraft.
I'll be very interested in seeing how much they really save (if anything) over having these aircraft custom-built from the beginning.
