Drones taking off in droves

This year the first unmanned flying vehicles (or drones) are to enter service in Russia’s armed forces. Meanwhile Islamabad has asked London to convince Washington to stop carrying out strikes on Pakistan’s territory by CIA drones. Recently these drones have also been detected in the sky over Syria.

Unmanned flying vehicles have already proved their efficiency and are becoming one of the main trends of modern military forces. The US is intensively using CIA drones to attack suspected bases of insurgents in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Drones have also entered service in Israeli and British forces.

This year the Russian army is only to receive its first small drones intended for reconnaissance and peacekeeping. At the same time, the Russian Defense industry companies are working on heavy drones which will be comparable to US combat drones.  Igor Korotchenko, the head of the Public Council of the Defense Ministry, told the “Voice of Russia” how the Russian armed forces will be equipped with unmanned flying vehicles.

"Within the governmental program on the re-equipment and modernization of the national armed forces, a line of drones including combat drones, will be developed. The Defense Ministry has signed two large contracts with companies on the development and serial production of drones. The tests of the first new generation drones are to start in the coming 2-3 years."
