Experienced sailors will receive sea pay raise

In an effort to fill thousands of open sea jobs, the Navy will soon raise the pay of experienced sailors serving aboard ships, officials announced Tuesday.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said the service is boosting an incentive known as sea pay, a monthly stipend that comes on top of base pay and rewards sailors and Marines for filling posts that typically involve long deployments.

The 25 percent increase - the first since 2001 - will take effect early this summer.

Sea pay currently ranges from $50 to $700, depending on a service member's rank and the cumulative length of time he or she has been assigned to ship-based jobs.
