Reps say more guns at Fort Hood would solve problem

WASHINGTON Gun-rights advocates Thursday seized upon the latest slayings at Fort Hood to insist that troops carrying privately owned weapons on bases might save lives.
The Fort Hood shootings Wednesday quickly rekindled a perennial debate over whether personal handguns strengthen or weaken individuals' security in general and during mass shootings in particular.
The Army bans GIs from bringing personal weapons onto military installations without permission from a senior military commander.
Broader Defense Department guidelines permit firearms for only qualified personnel when there is a reasonable expectation that life or (military) assets will be jeopardized if firearms are not carried.
