A fire broke out aboard the guided missile cruiser Hue City on Monday evening as the ship was crossing the Atlantic, the Navy announced today.

The extent of the damage was still being assessed, the Navy said, but there were no injuries and the ship continues under normal power.

The fire started in the No.1 gas turbine generator at 6:20 p.m., a Navy official said. A general quarters alert went out, and the crew responded to their duty stations. The fire spread through the stacks to the first and third decks, spawning smaller fires.

The Harry S. Truman strike group was crossing the Atlantic in the opposite direction as it returns to Norfolk. Sailors from the strike group boarded the Hue City and were helping assess damage.
