NEWPORT NEWS

The Navy accepted delivery of the John Warner Thursday. It will be the 12th Virginia class submarine.

The John Warner is the sixth to be delivered to the Navy by Newport News Shipbuilding, according to a Navy news release.

It is named for the five-term U.S. Senator from Virginia, who served in the Navy and Marine Corps and was the secretary of the Navy from the 1972 to 1974. His wife Jeanne is the ship's sponsor.

The John Warner successfully completed trials to evaluate its seaworthiness and operational capabilities on June 12, the news release said. The submarine will now be prepared for its Aug. 1 commissioning in Norfolk.
