(CNN) - A report released by the Government Accountability Office suggested there was no solid proof the Transportation Security Administration's screening methods are effective.
The agency, in charge of keeping the nation's transportation systems and travelers safe, lacks consistent performance measures to know if it's achieving its goals, according to the report. A house committee began a hearing Tuesday on TSA's alleged shortcomings.
"Solutions require a renewed focus on security, revise procedures, investment in technology, realistic and standardized training, a new balance between effectiveness and efficiency and support for our frontline officers," said Peter Neffenger, TSA administrator.
Neffenger said there was "significant pressure" to clear passengers at the risk of not completely resolving alarms.
"Our analysis also revealed our officers did not fully understand the capabilities of the equipment and several procedures were in accurate to resolve alarms," he said. "We have trained our officers to understand and use equipment properly, and we've corrected our procedures."
