Vietnam casualty is finally home

After nearly 50 years, a Texas airman based in San Antonio who was killed in a plane crash in Vietnam finally is being buried at home today, ending a trying phase of restlessness for his family.

“There's always been a void,” said Lea Ann McCann, who was days shy of her second birthday when her father's plane was shot down.

Airman 1st Class Jerry Mack Wall, 24, was one of five men aboard a Fairchild C-123B Provider who were killed in a high-risk “candlestick mission,” dropping flares to illuminate targets for fighters and bombers, on May 18, 1966.

Although the bodies of three crew members were found, the remains of Wall and Staff Sgt. William J. Moore were not recovered.

After reports surfaced of two parachutes spotted in the area, about 45 miles east of Pleiku in Binh Dinh Province, there was speculation they might have survived.

That means something, to his family and to all of us.

R.I.P., Airman Jerry Mack Wall.
