171,000 Retirees Likely To Lose Tricare Prime
Tom Philpott | November 08, 2012

With the presidential election over, Defense officials are expected to announce soon that military retirees and their dependents living more than 40 miles from a military treatment facility or base closure site will lose access to TRICARE Prime, the military's managed care option.

unhappycamper comment: Sorry about your healthcare; the USS Gerald R. Ford and F-35 programs need the money more than you do.

At least they will have Obamacare - better than being left out in the cold. patricia92243 Nov 2012 #1
That doesn't mean they lose their insurance. Sukie Nov 2012 #2

They will just be changed over to Tricare standard. We have Prime but we live within 25 miles of at least 5 MTF's. I believe the reason for the change is that Prime tends to send you to an MTF for specialty treatment. If you live 40 miles or more away, that doesn't make sense. With standard, you can go to any specialist, but you do have a slightly bigger copay. I know people who opt for it because of the flexibility. Most people who have any experience with MTF's prefer not to use them. When we get to the point that we need specialty care, we will convert to standard. LOL
