For Vietnam veterans at DU:

Did any of you every make a MARS phone call home while you were in Vietnam?

Even more specifically, did you use the MARS station in Cu Chi in 1970? We also had a setup that we could chopper out to firebases in surrounding area.

I was Ground Radio in the AF in '71 and we had that same Collins KWM2A set-up in a radio shack on the military side of Athens airport. We ran calls home all the time. I was in Athens TDY from Turkey, where MARS and all amateur radio was banned. Getting our hands on that equipment in Greece was like liberation.

After my little brother arrived in-country and was assigned to my Army division (101st Airborne), we got together and made a call home. To Mom, of course.
