Probe finds problems at Valley VA
By Sig Christenson : June 23, 2014 : Updated: June 23, 2014 2:33pm

SAN ANTONIO — A VA clinic in Harlingen didn't comply with rules on the credentialing and privileging of surgeons and also didn't pay contract doctors quickly enough, causing them to stop treating veterans, according to a federal investigation.

The revelation, made Monday in a letter by the Office of Special Counsel to President Obama, found issues with VA hospitals and clinics across the country. The counsel's office is an independent federal investigative and prosecutorial agency.

The counsel's top executive, Carolyn Lerner, told Obama that the VA “often admits to serious deficiencies in patient care, while implausibly denying any impact on veterans' health.”

She went on to say that investigators with her office uncovered 10 cases “where the VA's conclusions appear to contradict its own investigative findings.”
