One day, two congressional subpoenas for VA
William H. McMichael, The News Journal 5:52 p.m. EDT April 30, 2015

Committees in each house of Congress issued subpoenas to the Department of Veterans Affairs Thursday, seeking personnel and complaint files from the problem-plagued Philadelphia VA Regional Office and records related to an investigation into opiate prescription rates at the VA medical center in Tomah, Wisconsin.

Sen. Tom Carper, top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, signed off on its subpoena for the Tomah records, demanding the records by May 13.

The House VA Committee is chasing Philadelphia files related to employee mistreatment, with the chairman, Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., saying, "We can no longer afford to allow the VA to stonewall legitimate requests for information about that or about any other VA facility." The committee was provided documents late Wednesday it said were heavily redacted.

VA says Philadelphia has resolved "many" of its problems but acknowledges that some issues persist and are being investigated by the VA IG.

The Philadelphia office has since October 2013 has processed all Wilmington appeals cases and an unknown percentage of new Delaware claims. Philadelphia oversees benefits administration to 825,000 veterans in the region and houses one of the nation's three pension management centers.
