Mary Easley drove overnight to Omaha from Baird, Texas, for a spur-of-the-moment ceremony Wednesday at Miguel Hernandez Keith Park.

She carried precious cargo in the back of her car: Miguel Keith’s Medal of Honor from the Vietnam War.

Lance Cpl. Keith was an 18-year-old Marine from Omaha when he was killed in May 1970. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest award for valor.

His mother, Delores Keith, moved back to Texas after her son’s death. She couldn’t take the heartache of staying in Nebraska, said Easley, a family friend.
