What was the 1st Presidential Election you voted in?

Mine was Jimmy Carter. I was 21. Back in the olden days you had to be 21 to vote.

My 1st presidnetial election that I remember was Kennedy/Nixon. I remember coming home from school singing "Nixon, Nixon is our man, Kennedy belongs in a trash can". My parents set me straight the minute they heard it. Life time union members. Thats when I found out about democrats and republicans.

I know, I know. I was a young Marine, and Nixon had just arranged the biggest raise in US Military history. That was the year they lowered the voting age to 18, I think I was 19 at the time.

I figured it was time to start being a grownup and registered to vote.
I thought Watergate was a big deal from the get go.

I voted for Nixon only because he said he had a secret plan to end the war. He lied, obviously, and I have never voted for a Republican since. I had been fiercely anti war and had supported Eugene McCarthy, then Robert Kennedy. I didn't trust Humphrey because he had always supported the war until very near the election. I ended up being drafted at 26 due to a clerical error even though I had had deferments for being a student and then for being a teacher. I was able to enlist in the Air Force and ended up performing in the White House for a president I despised as a member of the USAF Strolling Strings. (I'm a violinist.)
