Last week, Harnett, 39, won another race few expected him to win when he upset a Gastonia lawyer to become chairman of North Carolinas Republican Party. Hes the first African-American to head the party and, as a self-described constitutional conservative, the first chairman championed by grass-roots and tea party Republicans.

Harnett beat Craig Collins, who was backed by Gov. Pat McCrory, North Carolinas two U.S. senators, a congressman, the lieutenant governor and leaders of the state House and Senate as well as the sitting chairman.

Is this a blatant attempt by NC Republicans to get the AA community to vote for Republicans
because, "look, see" this guy gets it (the tea party, conservative message)? Could
it be an attempt to cancel out the leadership from Rev. William Barber II of the NC NAACP, who has pulled together
an impressive coalition of people working to counteract the Republicans through the Moral Monday movement?
Is it really evidence of 'post racial' America? Or something else?
What does this group think about this? As an old white (64) woman, born in NY
who's lived in NJ, CA, MO, NE and NC (15 years), I'm curious.

(31,849 posts)the same way they treat Carson or Sowell or the NC Black conservative Tim Johnson (R.I.P.) ... They will largely ignore him, as his conservatism trumps his being Black.
As a general rule, Black folks meet Black republicans with a highly suspicious, side-eye ... and when that Black republican opens his mouth and the conservative falls out, game over!

Any and everybody associated with the tea party is a blight on the world. I don't care what color they are.

(6,148 posts)Clarence Thomas is a conservative Republican.
There will always be conservative Republicans. Can they rally the black vote? I'm not sure. They might split it. SOUTHERN black people are often socially conservative, pro-life and homophobic. The antithesis of the Democratic Party. However, we really don't like it when people try to mess with social security and medicare, so we can be pressured to vote Democratic with the right campaign.
But no, this is not a "post-racial America". This is desperation.

(31,234 posts)to neutralize the scary black guy in the White House. We also know they still don't care about the issues that matter to our community. The usefulness of these "new faces" will end as soon as the scary black guy leaves DC. The "outreach" is cynically political, and we know that. There have always been House Negroes, and this is basically how we see black Republicans.

(31,849 posts)how and what Black people, in general, think about the Black faces of conservatism (I wish I could find it) ... in short, we recognize that they are merely hustlers trying to find a spot in the sun.
