Related: About this forumOff Topic - So, I finally registered for classes for fall, yay!!
I have not been posting as much, and likely will be posting less to give myself time to prepare to go back to school - as an adult. Kinda scary, but I plan to have a great experience and to focus on the subjects that I enjoy. Everyone in this group has been inspirational to me in my personal growth. All of you. I have never met better group of people than you.
Btw, have any if you ever taken a CLEP test? I need to take a few according to my advisor, so I want to know if I need to study or just wing it like last time. Let me know if the tests are hard...

(6,409 posts)When I went back to college, after six years in the military, I was a little worried about fitting in with a younger group of people. Fortunately, my school was popular with non-traditional students, or "non-trads," as they were called. It was nice. I had no trouble with the academic end of things, and I got involved with all sorts of interesting stuff. Relax and enjoy yourself.

(3,859 posts)Taking a practice exam won't hurt and may help your final score. Also, it may alert you to time management issues if one subject takes longer than another. You probably already have this link, but it seems to provide practice tests:

(34,648 posts)I'm just a bit of a worry wart. Good advise doing the practice tests, I just hope the tests are not much harder.

(29,149 posts)What sort of subjects are you wanting to focus on? (if you don't mind my asking)
Anyway, good luck!

(34,648 posts)Take the classes that you want to take this time. I find it is so much better this time around since I recieve no pressure to choose something reasonable.

(47,209 posts)And pattern making- I know I'm really good at teaching that sort of thing and I've always enjoyed it. I need to take two gym classes and an English credit. Did all the design and technical stuff many years ago. But failed gym twice!

(34,648 posts)I thought we still had a foreign language requirement, but they said no. I bet you can pretty much take whatever you want now. 3 of my classes are art related and I can test out of the English. You can probably test out of some of the requirements and focus on draping. Is draping like designing clothing?

(47,209 posts)And fit that you'd like. I enjoy it a lot, and am good at explaining it to others- have taught quite a few sewers they could get from behind get machine and help me!! And make more money, lol. They're the best because they also know how it's made and how it should look. Anyway - in college I struggled with it for a couple semesters until I had an amzing teacher and a light went off. I think I'd like to teach a night class and do that for some kids too.

(34,648 posts)People with a passion for things make better teachers, imo. I think they have textile courses and of course, costume design. I hope you go for it. We'll be in school at the same time!

(47,209 posts)I'll be working (if any!) this fall. They're getting rid of a couple hundred people at our creative center this month. It's like the titanic over there. But hey! I might get the summer off!

(34,648 posts)You could see what their schedule looks like for classes. I noticed tgat alot of my art related classes have saturday classes that are twice as long as weekdays. That way you can get your credit hours by only having to go one day a week and the colleges usually have online classes for english and history. My history class and art history class will be online. Drawing is at night and math (which I hate) is twice a week in the mid morning. I tgink they try to make the class times so that adults like us can attend and still work. I'm pretty happy with the set up.

(47,209 posts)me. I could use a change. But it's going to mean a salary cut and likely less flexibility.
But I'm sure I'd enjoy someplace new.

(11,833 posts)I'm really happy for you my friend.
I've attended (and taught) some classes at my local community college, as an adult. It's great.
If it helps at all, I think one of the best things out there now is that younger people don't subscribe to 'age cliques' as much as they did a while back. You'll fit right in and find friends of different ages.
Thanks for the kind words about this group. I feel exactly the same.

(34,648 posts)I'm feeling excited to go and everyone is very welcoming, so I know it will be a positive experience.

(34,582 posts)I went back as an older adult, and found I took it much more seriously. One benefit- professors tend to like older students, IMO. They don't give as much of a headache.
on edit: as to the entrance exams, just do your best. If you have any deficiencies, like say math, it is good to know that up front so you don't get in over your head.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I'm more of an age with the staff, so I figured it would be relatively easy to figure out what they expect.
I took the entrance exams; bombed the math and aced the language arts. I just plan on testing out of some GERs and getting credit through CLEP. I'm feeling better now, I know what to expect. I'm feeling pretty pleased.
awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)But needed help in language arts. Good luck and have fun- college is fun especially when you can appreciate it.

(53,661 posts)I didn't study, only used what I learned in high school, it was on in my noggin by them. I was in the 95-99 percentile for all of those categories and I'm sure you'll ace it! Don't sweat it!
You would be great in foreign studies. Looking forward to finding out what your field of study will be! Don't forget all the civics you know and maybe you'll run for office up there, eventually!
Oh, and congratulations!

(34,648 posts)Knowing me, I'll switch majors every semester. I love history and art and fun stuff like that, writing, whatever. I'm going to have fun and try a bit of everything. Many of the UAA allumni are now in the legislature, so you never know, Mark Begich did it, maybe I will too.

I pursued my doctoral degree with a similar inspiration. I was taking a class with a guy that had a PhD and thought he was an idiot. I said to myself...if that guy can do it....lol. Of course, Mark Begich will be a positive inspiration. Have you considered political science? LOL.

(1,989 posts)Congratulations!!! My experience has been that non-traditional students fair better than their younger counterparts. So, I'm sure you'll be an excellent student.

(89,249 posts)high school students to maybe work or do something else after graduating and then go to college later if they want.
of course they should have the traditional option also but i think there are some who would have a better idea of what they want to study and may even be more interested in what they are studying if they go later.
i had a high school science teacher who was probably like 60 years old who had gone back to school at that type to get either a higher or different degree.
i also don't think it's that uncommon these days so hopeuflly you will meet others like you.
I did go for a while after high school, but I really hated the classes I picked. This time it will be much better, I think. I don't have any parents telling me what to do.

(31,849 posts)Adult returning to school.
I was sitting on an interview panel and between candidates, the panel of HR Professionals, discussed an observation ... adults returning to school tend to do far better GPA-wise ... and that is seen as very favorable for employers, in that the high GPA demonstrates an/the ability to balance and prioritize competing project demands.
You go my sister!
About the CLEP(s) ... BabyGirl 1SBM, took several and tested out of a couple ... we bought her the books, but I don't know she picked them up!

(34,648 posts)I am hoping to do very well this time around. I have a feeling that this is going to be an exciting time.
*I got those clep books too, but the books make the test seem so easy, I figured that it must be some sort of deception. *
