(22,336 posts)by the idea that the Civil War was as hard on white southeners as slavery was on black southerners.
Or that fictional movies like Cold Mountain are a good representation of southern heritage. (I asked about Gone With the Wind and Song of the South.)

(6,592 posts)Who were most probably racists, but not slave owners. (Don't know this for sure, but I'd make a small bet.)
gollygee
(22,336 posts)but still, slavery was way way way WAY WAY way worse and it's ridiculous to say they were anywhere near equivalent.

(31,849 posts)there are quite a few (self-identified) non-Black regular posters here (the OP, included).
And if you poke around ... you will see that it take quite a bit of effort to get one's self invited to leave ... stating or disagreeing with an opinion is not enough.

I've seen some of those posts. You won't see any like that from me.

(53,661 posts)Did this 'shared suffering' give the white population the right to cause suffering among the black population for a century or more after the Civil War?
When you are post the quote, 'No one is more enslaved than a slave who doesn't think they're enslaved' do you think wage slavery is equal to chattel slavery?
Because the black population of the South knew the true depths of slavery. Not less income or dependence upon employment, which is the definition of wage slavery.
They were not unemployed, they were often worked to death and not paid a thing for their labor. The slave population shared a suffering that other groups did not undergo, with rape, torture, lynching, terrorism, exclusion and the family breakup that the white population has not.
When the Union conquered the South, they killed the POTUS. Booth was not a lone wolf. And then they continued the slaughter as they were offended by Emancipation. See this, one of many such oppressions:
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2015/07/09/3677437/fourteenth-amendment-anniversary/
Did the Union conduct lynching and tarring and feathering? Did they systematically rape and rob the oppressed in the South as a matter of control and business?
You may have written this off the top of your head, but I think you should edit to take in all of the 'suffering' that went on, not just that of the alleged Confederate victims. I don't care what a thrashing they got and I am from the South. They were ready to do the same things to the North or the slaves. Sorry, but I don't see a moral equivalency there, IMO.

(31,828 posts)I had to add my two cents to that thread.
I'm not not sure I made myself clear - but I really truly *think* Southerners holding onto their Confederate and Antebellum sympathies and "hurt" need to get over it.
If former SS Officers could be kind to a brown child - so could the grandchildren of a Confederate soldier. But they were not. 100 years vs 25 years.
Europe is not perfect - but at least they try.
Then again - my husband's uncles and his father's cousins were like:
Good for you Gianni (short for Giovanni) - you stole one back! And she's Bella and educated! Atta boy!
Those guys in their 80's and 90's are still pissed about American GIs "stealing" Italian girls away after WW II.
You can't make this shit up! Confederate Descendents - Southern Pride! Woo hoo!
Children of War and Veterans in Italy? Just pissed they had one less woman to flirt with!

(18,124 posts)won't help end racism because most white americans don't care about ending racism. That would mean everyone would have access to the privilege enjoyed by the majority of that subgroup everyday. Don't get me wrong there are people of that subgroup that want to do the right thing, just never has been enough of them to make a real and LASTING difference. Racism will never go away because of people like the one pointed out by you in your OP. They have in the past overtly and now slickly and slyly apply honey coated rationales to the racist nature of the southern "heritage" and will NEVER stop the civil war raging in the undercurrents of our social and racial fabric.

I am not sure what I alone could do about it, but I havent tried very hard beyond writing about it and voting the way I do.
OK, I have a twitter account dedicated to protecting the right to vote which is primarily targeted at helping POC maintain their voting rights since they are the ones the R party is purposely trying to take the vote away from.
But overall even those of us with the best intentions simply are not going to make it a priority, because we dont have to.
We need a modern day version of SNCC, and it needs to be inundated with white people like myself who need to put up or shut up.

Hey your COMRADES are out here. Damn the wishy, washy, it's why after 160 years racism is not in the trash can of history.

(22,336 posts)and to minimize our country's racist history. I imagine there always has been. Sometimes some people are OK talking about the south's racist history but present the north as relatively racially harmonious or just, which is also completely untrue.
We only have some hope at changing that if we talk about it. But it does get frustrating. I feel like those of us who are white and have this on our radars need to talk about it because the known African American members of DU seem to be much more likely to receive hides. I've said stuff way worse than things that have gotten 1SBM or Bravenak hides, but I've never gotten a hide.

Always making excuses for bigots.
Someone should do a post - when you make excuses for bigots -
You get thrown into the same trash pile as them.
But this one -
One of Obamas daughters could be eviscerated by a mob of those types -
And they would find a million reasons why she deserved it. A very hateful person in our midst.
