(34,648 posts)Watch it. You will see why I watch it over and over. I sometimes feel like Miss Sofia, but sometimes I'm Shug Avery. Once in a while I'm Miss Celie telling Mister 'You do right by me, or all you ever even think about is gonna crumble!' Or the time she told Mister 'I ain't never asked you for nothin, not even your sorry ass hand in marriage'. My relationship with America is like Celie and Mister's marriage. You'll see what I mean after you watch.

(37,457 posts)I'm a clueless white guy lol I didn't want to assume anything, like I did with "The Help" lol
Glad you enjoyed it! I'll have to see it again.
Should have won an Oscar.

(24,544 posts)There was another black poster here named Chovexani who always referred to the good folks on DU as Ms. Millies.
I get the distinct impression that she would very much agree with your characterization of the Ms. Millie-gasm going on in GdP right now.

(34,648 posts)I'm still getting lectures.

(24,544 posts)Between the racism, the lectures and the Pitt-gasms begging that has been (or is it a never was?) not to leave, I just skipped DU altogether for the last few days. Doesn't appear that I've missed anything at all.
There were more OPs and posts over Pitt leaving than there have ever been on Sandra Bland. This place is the biggest joke on the web.

(34,648 posts)More folks cried over a interrupted speech than any black person that got killed by cops or whatever. All the caterwauling around here made me think Will Pitt had up and died. Nope. Just ran off cause his 24 hour shit from who knows when. Such thin skins.

(12,723 posts)Danny Glover's character is not exactly positive but that too is a plus. I must confess I have not sen it in years but i think it mostly worked.

(24,780 posts)I've seen it many times. My favorite line in the whole movie is, "Do you think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple and don't notice it?"

(4,510 posts)In that movie there are no positive black men and the so called black male patriarchy is presented as a bigger antagonist than jim crow in the south for black people in the 1910's.

(6,148 posts)I liked it, or rather, I respected it, but incest makes me sick, so I don't think I'd see it again. It DEFINITELY sparked a black gender war. I remember how so many black men hated it. I also remember that the book gave more of a lesbian feel that got cut out of the movie. It would not have gone over well back then.
If you like watching "important" movies, go see it. Kinda like Spielberg's holocaust movie. It has its redeeming moments, but the subject matter is not pleasant.

(31,823 posts)Beautiful movie - and I love love love Margaret Avery as shug - but -
The book I felt went to greater depth exploring the relationship between Celie and Shug and how shug kind of became a replacement for Nettie.
Celie is almost the 'anti stereotype' - she's soft, sweet, kind, patient, homey (takes care of her no good family), a plain jane, gentle -
In this - Goldberg hit it out of the ballpark. She really put out there this alternative narrative that America continues to hold onto in terms of stereotypes of black women.

(1,989 posts)In 1985, I was 14...and some of those mental images from the book was...a bit more than I could handle. Don't judge me. I was a late bloomer. But, I think that was about my age when I read the book.
Now, my favorite movie scene...
Mister is going to cook a meal for Shug. Ms. Celie proceeds to watch the process from the rocking chair...you all know what comes next...
That scene...and the final church singing scene...could've definitely been my church in rural Mississippi. The preacher even looked like one I used to know. LOL.

(25,026 posts)but i find such works better in a written medium for me as I just tend to like my movies to be more escapism and entertainment.
