And had a life experience flash back, when Morning Joe flashed a graphic indicating that the Q found HRC's #1 descriptor is "liar" ... I thought I'd park it here, as perhaps, it will have particular resonance due to recent events.
It was 1997 (or 1998) ... 1SBM was standing on the side of the road ... handcuffed, as Tucson's finest was rifling through his vehicle, for the (apparent) infraction of being in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time.
After an hour of standing there ... and hundreds of commuters gawking at the Black guy handcuffed on the side of the road ... Mr. Officer came over to me, turned me around, and as he was taking the cuffs off, whispered, "Okay ... we couldn't prove you did anything this time; but, we both know you you are not clean", and wished me a good evening. I can only assume that Mr. Officer had been listening to the accepted American narrative: Black Male = Guilty of Something.
It seems 20+ years of being told, on a (near) daily basis: HRC = Guilty of Something, is having an effect.

(19,460 posts)The Clintons will never get past the "being guilty of something." But, Bill Clinton would say to you that what he and Hillary have been through for 20 years means nothing compared to what Blacks have been through for over 200 years.

(31,828 posts)Seizing our assets/homes. Freshwest found the post but I can't capture - some crazy lady tried to tell me last year that EVERYONE should be taxed down to $15 an hour. I'm thinking . . . Uh - lady - we can't afford our mortgages in NJ at $15 an hour.
So I guess by seizing our assets is how they would be able to tax us all down to $15 an hour? Because then we wouldn't have a mortgage. But do they split up my home that we poured time, money and sweat renovating and bringing back to life - our 'home' - into one for four families so we can all live on top of each other like they did in Communist Russia?
Everyone must look, act, walk, talk, live, dress, think the same in this crazy utopia they dream of.
No thanks - I'll stick with my Capitalism in my Federal Republic thank you very much.

(19,460 posts)My husband and I have worked for over 40 years, saved money, scrimped to put 4 kids through college, we buy our grand daughter's school clothes and supplies because it helps the parents, we give as much money to charity as we can afford to, we donate our time to charities, we don't take trips, we don't buy new clothes or jewelry, and we don't live high on the hog. Yet, we are horrible people because we don't want to pay for other kid's free college, we don't want to pay more taxes because ours are already high, we don't want what little we have in our 401K to be taxed more than it is because it is all we have left, we just want to get old together and enjoy spending what we have worked for. I already live in Utopia.

(31,828 posts)My life choices - led me to a place of being childless by chance at 42 with a 46 year old husband. However - we look at it like this -
Why shouldn't we enjoy the money?
My husband helped me fund a charity last year that provides a place for utility insecure and limited cooking facility folks to take advantage of food banks. We provide money, time, resources to several food banks - heavily weighted towards the one in our county - one of the wealthiest in America yet we STILL have food and shelter insecure people. *smdh*. We give to everything from the NAACP to Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the VVA to Vote Vets.org, etc. etc.
If I DO want to go to Thailand and can afford it? Why shouldn't I?
Some of what happens in life is by chance. I totally get that. Trust me - I GET it.
But it's what you do with the chances you've been dealt that matters. And when your chances were pretty good - you SHOULD give.
And nope - I don't want my mom taxed to death. My parents busted their asses and she'll be 68 this year with a history of family living well into their 90's. Her parents passed away in their early 50's and never took Social Security benefits as a result. So she's been paying into the fund (retired but doing little things to keep busy) for someone else's parents now in their 80's or 90's.
You know what? It's HER turn. She never expected to be a young widow - she smashed a glass ceiling in the hotel industry many years ago - and it's HER turn to rest and relax. But at the same time - we SHOULD be taxing my salary all the way through the year to fund SSI. We COULD (as earners) pay a few percentage points more into the Federal Tax Pool - if it's going to education, infrastructure, social services, the disabled, the elderly - go on and tax more. It's worth it!
But my mom? Folks better lay the eff off of her resources.

(31,849 posts)I will not apologize for, or "feel bad about" my wealth!!!!
I saw a post the other day with pictures (and prices, listed) of the vehicles of some folks that attended a HRC fund raiser.
My first response was, "Really? It really doesn't shock my conscience that folks attending a political presidential fund raising event would be ... wait for it ... wealthy."
But my second response was, "Come on ... Tell the truth. How many here would be pushing similar rides or living on similar estates ... if they could afford it."
But I decided to just open another OP because posting any of that would be wasted words.

(31,849 posts)that that "tax 'em down to $15.00/hr", earns $20.0/hr?
As that anonymous internet quote I found years ago said, "Revolutionaries are not so upset with the system; but rather, their place in the system."

(31,828 posts)And kind of why it's hard for me to believe when the media harps, rants, whines, and tries to gin up scandal around HRC or Bill.
If you are used to lies being told about YOU - why wouldn't you assume they are telling lies about other people too?

(24,568 posts)of that experience is the word "accepted." After all, hundreds of years of tales about the really, awfully, terribly scary Black man must be based on some "truth." We see it ad nauseam when a Black man, teen or child is killed by leos and there is a mad rush to find the past thuggish behavior that simply must be there, just because.
I also think your analogy to HRC is spot on. For many, there has to be something of substance there or it wouldn't keep coming up again and again. It can also lead to fatigue for many of her potential supporters, and questions of whether we really want four or eight more years of Clinton investigations and "scandals." The latter is just as damaging to her campaign, imo.
