On this day in 1865 the 13th amendment declaring slavery illegal was

adopted.

The Thirteenth Amendment was proposed by the Thirty-eighth United States Congress, on January 31, 1865. The amendment was adopted on December 6, 1865, when Georgia ratified it. On December 18, 1865, Secretary of State William H. Seward, proclaimed the amendment to have been ratified by the legislatures of 27 of the then 36 states. All 36 states as of 1865 eventually ratified the amendment. (sorce wikkipedia)

note; Kentucky held out until 1976 and Mississippi finally surrendered in 1995.

Millions of slaves were in private hands. There is no way a government could prohibit slavery and have it work.

I'm sorry, everything these days relates back to the insane gun nut arguments. The sad reality is that within 20 years of the Emancipation Proclamation the effective re-enslavement of much of the African American population of the south had begun, entering the era of Jim Crow, "the Nadir", and it would be almost 100 years until the Civil Rights era brought about the changes that ended this disgraceful part of our history. The struggle is never easy, but that is no reason not to struggle.
