(8,709 posts)never ended. But as far as an all out war, that will be shutdown immediately yet the terrorism and deaths will continue unless Sanders or Clinton address this guerilla war happening now not as just another issue after the election.

(6,150 posts)a guerilla war would be brought on by an organized effort. I think that's why the media always emphasizes "he worked alone" whenever some white guy shoots up the place. "No, no, it's not terrorism, he acted alone." Interestingly enough, if some of these nut jobs ever organized, I think we would see Paris all over again.

(8,709 posts)definitely media stereotyping and I think alienating a group, many white people, who may not at all agree with the violence but are certainly on the same ideological spectrum. I can't imagine if the media started reporting that white men are the most dangerous terrorists in this countries, as they do with muslin terrorists, and we have at least a discussion about it or even the white-on-white crime that far exceeds the so-called black-on-black crime as the real social disaster. Just ridiculous.

(16,286 posts)My step son gets mad as hell at me when I discuss the death and destruction part and not the greatness part.
I explain to him that the white community doesnt need me to defend them, they have many doing that already.
But as a white American I am aware that in some circles my word carries more weight than yours does (if you are Black that is), and for that reason I feel it is my responsibility (to put it mildly) to talk about white racism in America (the only kind, actually, white that is).
It is kind of like when my mom befriended Maya Angelou before she was famous and before it was "OK" for a small town white family to invite a Black couple to dinner.
I learned from my mother that we are equal, same. Period. I love having an excuse to tell that story, too.

(8,709 posts)because growing up was basicallly nothing but eurocentrism and its greatness, totally neglecting, in a multicultural society, the incredible contributions by other people that has made Western Civilization great. So everyone has been indoctrinated/programmed/conditioned about the greatness of white men and only with incredible effort have other great societies trickled into school books.
And I think that's part of the problem that we have to watch our language before we can even deal with just plain old statistics, while lies and distortions that historically and currently inflict harm on PoC is the norm.
Your stepson reminds me of a segment of PBS's America After Ferguson townhall of last year. A young black guy spoke of the system, the system, the system, never mentioning white or black. A white guy who disagreed to some extent was perturbed by the use of the word system and actually heard, IMO, "white" and not "system." For white guy, we have to change the language before there can even be a conversation. Using the word system is language that is "fingerpointing" but I think is just another deflection not to talk about the system. The encounter starts at about 11:05 to 17:54 http://video.pbs.org/video/2365329749/
I'm sorry but there is no other language or way to talk about the ills other than talking about it. For me and many others, there's like a bone in my throat if I have to remind people like your stepson of his greatness before I can say stop killing us. How maschochistic is that for Pete sake?

(16,286 posts)white people will tune me out.
Including many here at DU who I am trying to be friendly with, but it is hard.
But like you said, I am watching my language when I dont want to.
I just watched the video or the part you wanted me to watch or pointed out
Translation: "I, the white guy will only allow your reality to exist if you can relieve me of any guilt first, and tell me I am a good person and so on"
Zimmerman was a big brother? In the program Big Brother?
I dont know how in the hell he qualified for that
(the white guy hates having the finger pointed at him, tough shit)

Yes, I've seen that happening to you many times. It's hard because you don't get much support. But that's okay because those who have ears and care, do hear you even if they don't speak up.
No matter how hurt the white guy in the video is, it doesn't matter because the conversation does continue with those who are not as fragile. The changes, as slow as molasses, are happening. One philosopher said we're not doing this for ourselves, because we will not see all the fruits of our labors, but mainly setting the groundwork for future generations who'll have their own problems to deal with in this continuing struggle. And hopefully brutality and the deaths without consequence will not be one of their problems.
I've never looked into Zimmerman and Big Brother. I can't stand the sight of him, popping up every few months to brag, trying in vain to remain relevant. Ugh, Please!
