$5.3M Confederate flag proposal ‘appalling waste’ of tax dollars - elleng

A proposal to spend $5.3 million to erect a museum display for the Confederate battle flag removed from the Statehouse grounds would be an “appalling waste of public dollars,” Democratic presidential hopeful Martin O’Malley said Saturday during a town hall meeting in Charleston.

“I’m sure there are museums existing already where a space could be found,” O’Malley said in response to a question from the audience.

The event came two days after consultants Watson Tate Savory Architects Inc. and Haley Sharpe Design presented their plan to a seven-member S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Commission tasked in July with considering how to display the flag. The commission expects to meet again before the end of the month to further discuss the recommendation.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Taxpayers may be shelling out more than $5 million for a new Confederate flag display at a museum.

The flag was removed from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds this summer after 50 years in the wake of the massacre of nine black church members in Charleston.

State law called for the flag to be displayed at the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. The firms Watson Tate Savory and Haley Sharpe Design presented a $5.3 million proposal Thursday that includes renovating the museum and creating a newer, more modern display for the flag.

The commission that runs the museum gave its preliminary approval. Lawmakers will eventually have to OK any proposal. At least one black lawmaker says at first blush, the price tag seems a little steep.

First, I understand there are greater outrages being inflicted by the plutocrat oligarch corporate overlords.

Second, I don't care.

This is about two slaps in the face.

Slap 1: In the faces of those Americans who died fighting this foreign enemy.
Slap 2: Black tax payers around the country.

Don't believe me? Check out who is paying for what, the fact that SC can't afford to feed its poor, educate its chidren, etc etc yet operates on this stupid idiotic 5th grader idea that the rest of the country has never ending pockets. You men to tell me the Daughters of the Confederacy or some such organization can't figure out a way to do this with private funds? With all due repect - I disagree with paying taxes to Fed Gov for this stupidity.

O'Malley is correct - this is an appalling waste of tax dollars.

SC. taker State:
http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/

If you look only at the first measure—how much the federal government spends per person in each state compared with the amount its citizens pay in federal income taxes—other states stand out, particularly South Carolina: The Palmetto State receives $7.87 back from Washington for every $1 its citizens pay in federal tax. This bar chart, made from Wallet Hub's data, reveals the sharp discrepancies among states on that measure.

Another part of the explanation is easier to discern. The reddest states on that map at the top—Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Maine—have exceptionally high poverty rates and thus receive disproportionately large shares of federal dollars. Through a variety of social programs, the federal government disburses hundreds of billions of dollars each year to maintain a “safety net” intended to help the neediest among us. Consider, for example, the percentage of each state’s residents who get “food stamps” through the federal government’s SNAP program. This chart tells the story
.

So I live in NJ - the least dependent state that only gets back .$48 on the dollar.

Someone please tell me - precisely What's In It For Me to pay for this? I'm never going to it, it's stupid, and it would most likely be a hostile environment for black Americans to step foot into.

The thing should be in a museum, yes - in the farthest dusty corner or in the basement. Certainly no significant amount of money should be spent on it.

that any consideration is given to this tax wasting idea, especially since it is a state unable/unwilling to adequately care for its most vulnerable citizens. It is one thing to expect the Federal government, via taxpayers in other states, to help pay for a safety net through programs such as SNAP, but another matter entirely to expect tax payers to foot the bill for a museum "honoring" this symbol of our shameful past.

You are absolutely correct that this is a slap in the face. I had hoped that the furor over the flag this summer would cause southern state governors and legislatures to realize that this ugly, racist symbol has no place in public, and that it is a hateful act to support the ignorant flag-wavers. Apparently not.

They have no interest in a using Tax dollars for people too poor for private schools or not racist enough to home school.

What O'M said is absolutely sensible and it was met with applause in a Southern state.
