Related: About this forumWhat I learned today in GD-P
1. Pointing out that civil rights champions were pragmatic strategists = calling them "surrender monkeys;"
2. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was JFK's idea, which he first proposed in June of 1963 and LBJ rammed it through a year later, over the objections of "pragmatists in the government;"
3. If MLK had listened to people like me (who believed that the civil rights movement involved pragmatic long-term strategy), "he would never have pressured LBJ to support the 1965 Voting Rights Act;"
4. Charles Hamilton Houston, who developed the Houstonian Jurisprudence that dismantled legal segregation by systematically and incrementally breaking down the justifications for the "separate but equal" doctrine over a 20 year period did not actually champion "'incrementalism' or any reasonable synonym for that." Instead, he was simply "an outstanding human being who devoted his entire life to undoing Jim Crow and fighting the good fight at every opportunity, to improve the conditions of AAs everywhere, not unlike MLK Jr.;"
5. The NAACP's legal strategy had nothing to do with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act;
6. If Dr. King were alive today, he'd vote for Bernie Sanders.
And that was all just from one thread . . .
http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511103414#post1
I also learned how frighteningly ignorant of our history so many of our fellow Democrats are. It's a sad testament to the educational system that they know so little about the civil rights movement - yet are so confident in their ignorance as to pontificate about that of which they know so little.
Very, very informative . . .
Thanks to the members of the AA group who stepped in to offer insights and comments - you really enriched the conversation!

(11,856 posts)It made me feel bad to see so much wasted energy. Even though your main antagonist came to his senses and apologized, the exchange highlighted the fact we live in an age where reactionary responses are normal.
it seems that we do not educate our populace in reality based facts, or encourage critical thinking. It keeps the masses in a constant state of confusion thus rendered, easier to control.
Keep posting thought provoking materials.

(24,544 posts)I read the first 2-3 responses in that thread and just backed away laughing and weeping simultaneously. I just can't be bothered. It is just not worth the freaking effort or the migraine that will ALWAYS accompany trying to educate such a hopeless group of people.

(24,577 posts)but I read through the thread you linked here. The level of ignorance is downright appalling. I can only applaud those of you courageous enough to make the effort to enlighten if not educate.

(3,900 posts)The level of ignorance is bad enough - but their certainty of their superior knowledge and complete sense of entitlement in lecturing others about it is what really gets to me.
But I am pleased that one of the most reactionary ones came around and seems interested in really learning something. And I've gotten a couple of emails from people who say they are going to do some more research to learn about this, so that's a good thing.
I think I should try to stay out of there tomorrow. It's going to be ugly and it may be too much for my spirit to withstand . . .

(24,577 posts)The arrogance of some our more vocal Duers is hard for me to take also, and I simply gave up reading those threads. Whether courage or insanity, I do admire those who go toe-to-toe trying to balance the discussion and do a little teaching. This AA group has some of the smartest people on DU and it hurts when they are dismissed and disrespected.
Keep your head down tomorrow!

(99,710 posts)My favorite was when I was told that if Muhammad Ali was politically active he would be for Bernie Sanders. The presumptuousness and sense of entitlement that allows someone who doesn't really know the first damn thing about him to appropriate his legacy is mind boggling.
I hope nobody presumes to speak for him but himself.

I also volunteered with Working Families on behalf a VERY conservative Democrat once too. It was one of the few competitive congressional districts, the split was razor thin that year and we needed him to win to retain control of the House.
But yeah, revolutions are never incremental, no one ever compromises and they know what is in everyone's mind What I think, if they had ever really fought, they would know that in the trenches, mostly you like the person who has your back. Pretty talk is not enough.

(16,286 posts)than Bernie Sanders, if he isnt the nominee.
Bernie, unlike some, is well aware of the absolute madness which would ensue if the cons took over all power.
You can hear it in Thom Hartmann's voice, each time he talks about electing Bernie, he ALWAYS now adds " but if Hillary is the nominee she will be thousands times better than the cons"
He knows, he knows what is at stake.

(3,900 posts)him. Most have not even heard of him.
He was known in the black community as "The Man Who Killed Jim Crow."
He also said, "A lawyer is either a social engineer or he is a parasite on society."
He was Thurgood Marshall's professor, law school dean and mentor.
An amazing, remarkable, brilliant man.
Recommend the best book or article that gives me an overview of his life. A long form article would be best since my reading list is impossibly crowded right now, but I do love biographies and memoirs too.
Also would help if I spent less time talking smack on the DU! I always think, Oh, I will log out soon and go read, and then it is too late to start anything serious the next time I look. Bet no one else here EVER has that problem, right?
