What I learned today in GD-P

1. Pointing out that civil rights champions were pragmatic strategists = calling them "surrender monkeys;"

2. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was JFK's idea, which he first proposed in June of 1963 and LBJ rammed it through a year later, over the objections of "pragmatists in the government;"

3. If MLK had listened to people like me (who believed that the civil rights movement involved pragmatic long-term strategy), "he would never have pressured LBJ to support the 1965 Voting Rights Act;"

4. Charles Hamilton Houston, who developed the Houstonian Jurisprudence that dismantled legal segregation by systematically and incrementally breaking down the justifications for the "separate but equal" doctrine over a 20 year period did not actually champion "'incrementalism' or any reasonable synonym for that." Instead, he was simply "an outstanding human being who devoted his entire life to undoing Jim Crow and fighting the good fight at every opportunity, to improve the conditions of AAs everywhere, not unlike MLK Jr.;"

5. The NAACP's legal strategy had nothing to do with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act;

6. If Dr. King were alive today, he'd vote for Bernie Sanders.

And that was all just from one thread . . .
http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511103414#post1

I also learned how frighteningly ignorant of our history so many of our fellow Democrats are. It's a sad testament to the educational system that they know so little about the civil rights movement - yet are so confident in their ignorance as to pontificate about that of which they know so little.

Very, very informative . . .

Thanks to the members of the AA group who stepped in to offer insights and comments - you really enriched the conversation!

It made me feel bad to see so much wasted energy. Even though your main antagonist came to his senses and apologized, the exchange highlighted the fact we live in an age where reactionary responses are normal.
it seems that we do not educate our populace in reality based facts, or encourage critical thinking. It keeps the masses in a constant state of confusion thus rendered, easier to control.

Keep posting thought provoking materials.

I also volunteered with Working Families on behalf a VERY conservative Democrat once too. It was one of the few competitive congressional districts, the split was razor thin that year and we needed him to win to retain control of the House.

But yeah, revolutions are never incremental, no one ever compromises and they know what is in everyone's mind What I think, if they had ever really fought, they would know that in the trenches, mostly you like the person who has your back. Pretty talk is not enough.

Bernie, unlike some, is well aware of the absolute madness which would ensue if the cons took over all power.

You can hear it in Thom Hartmann's voice, each time he talks about electing Bernie, he ALWAYS now adds " but if Hillary is the nominee she will be thousands times better than the cons"

He knows, he knows what is at stake.
