Please consider voting for Bernie Sanders. I ask that of my friends here.

Please dont let childish and obnoxious and often racist behavour on the part of some his supporters push you away.

I would never, not for an instant, pretend to remotely know what is better for a non white community, and I dont know now, so all I can do is go with my gut and my gut says Bernie.

Now, if you disagree, I will listen to you and learn from you as to why.

What I wont do is argue with you, because I would be a fool to think I am qualified to do that.

I learn so much here and will continue to, and if Bernie is not chosen and Hillary is the nominee I will work my ass off for her.

that is a promise!

But KD has the potential to break Kareems scoring record if he stays healthy.

He has something that Kareem and few others ever had - a shot that he can get off clean anytime.

With Kareem it was the skyhook, but KD's shot is simpler. It's a regular jumper. Only his setup is lightning fast and he releases the shot so quick that his defender can't position himself to defend it.

Since Jevin is a 7 footer no one can get up quickly enough. If he is covered by a man tall enough to affect the shot KD will go right by him.

If he stays healthy and he sticks around he has the tool to do it. Noone else does.

...my wife and I attended events of all 3 candidates.

O'Malley here in Ames during the week, and Hillary (with Gabby Giffords and her husband) on Saturday in Ames at the university, and Bernie in Des Moines on Sunday, with the Caucus on Monday.

Although my wife (a black woman from Colombia) was initially for Hillary, she certainly gave Bernie a chance.

In fact, she told me on the way home from Bernie's event that she was warming up to Bernie during his speech, but that she felt that it ended suddenly and was left unfinished without even a single mention of guns, which she found unsettling having heard Gabby speak at the Hillary event the day before.

Bernie's event stood out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way. (Was Bernie aware that Hillary had been in Ames, just 30 miles away, the day before, and that she had appeared with Gabby? Did he consider how his speech would appear to folks who attended both events?)

So she caucused for Hillary the next day. (It was her first Iowa caucus, and this November will be her first election. She saw Obama in Des Moines in 2007, but was unable to vote for him in 2008 and 2012.)

I like that Bernie is now a cosponsor of the bill to repeal the PLCAA, but he really needs to up his game and start telling folks about it.

And he needs to finish his damn speeches!

the only reason he's co-sponsoring the repeal of the PLCAA is because it's a safe bet that it won't be going anywhere, he can safely vote for repeal knowing that it will never get nearly the votes needed to repeal it.
BTW, the PLCAA is a good law, it's been upheld by the IL. Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court, so there's no question of it's constitutionality.

...and the US Supreme Court, so there's no question of it's constitutionality.

In 1987, a few hundred of us (the number 481 comes to mind, but it was a long time ago) sat down on the steps of the US Supreme Court and questioned the Constitutionality of their 1986 Bowers v Hardwick ruling.

We were arrested, held for 48 hours, and released.

This ruling we were questioning was later overturned in Lawrence v Texas in 2003. (Scalia dissented, arguing in his dissent that the decision would lead to the legalization of gay marriage and masturbation. He was right. Both gay marriage and masturbation are now legal. And may he rest in peace.)

So, you see, I don't necessarily accept arguments based on the infallibility of even the highest of courts as a premise.

That segment struck me as humorous ... I don't know why. But I don't think that the poster was talking about infallibility of the court, only that the law had been tested by a court challenge and survived ... and since the court usually adheres to it's own precedents (and with the passing of scalia, it will happen more often), it will likely do upheld.

20. Here's the passage in qestion from Scalia's dissent in Lawrence:
Sun Feb 14, 2016, 10:19 AM
Feb 2016
State laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality, and obscenity are likewise sustainable only in light of Bowers’ validation of laws based on moral choices. Every single one of these laws is called into question by today’s decision; the Court makes no effort to cabin the scope of its decision to exclude them from its holding.

It's kind of fun to compare Scalia's dissent in Lawrence v Texas with a passage from the oral arguments of Virginia Assistant Attorney General R.D. McIlwaine before the US Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia (1967):

The state's prohibition of interracial marriage ... stands on the same footing as the prohibition of polygamous marriage, or incestuous marriage, or the prescription of minimum ages at which people may marry, and the prevention of the marriage of people who are mentally incompetent.

Timestamp: 1:19:30 - 1:20:05 in audio here: https://www.oyez.org/cases/1966/395

Now, I would never accuse such a brilliant legal mind of plagiarism, especially today, but...

Was nobody concerned about the legalization of masturbation back in 1966? I was kind of disappointed to not hear it mentioned in oral arguments there.

at myself when I DO get excited about a candidate.

I prefer to be really, really cold and calculating about politicians so I can be sure I am getting the best out of them. Because, at the end of the day, they are really cold and calculating about getting my vote. It is ALWAYS about the voter math in the end, even for the ones who have their hearts in the right place. If they are serious about winning. It is easy to be pure if you are ok with losing....

I expect politicians to be politicians. What is that parable about the scorpion who rode across the rive on the back of another animal and stings them to death in the middle because that is their nature? Politicians are like that, but they sting you once they are safe and sound on the other side. Nature of the beast and the nature of the game. Nothing personal, usually.
