Each year the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress selects recordings to be preserved as part of the national collection. This year the Library of Congress added John Coltranes A Love Supreme to their librarya huge honor as only 25 songs deemed significant to American history and culture make the cut.
These recordings, by a wide range of artists in many genres of music and in spoken word, will be preserved for future listeners, said acting Librarian of Congress David S. Mao in a statement. This collection of blues, jazz, rock, country and classical recordings, interspersed with important recordings of sporting events, speeches, radio shows and comedy, helps safeguard the record of what weve done and who we are.
A Love Supreme makes a total of 450 recordings for The National Recording Registry in the library as report by NY Times Artbeat.

(8,709 posts)I was just thinking about you, as I'm about to add an entry into your thread Black History That Doesn't make It Into The History Books
My goodness, Coltrane's albums were around my house and played especially on Sunday mornings. I'm like what sense could parents possibly make of this, it was so irritating But somehow the music became a part of me by osmosis, I guess.

(24,544 posts)GOOD with a capital G stuff?
Although yesterday, we were listening to classic Police. When "Message in a Bottle" came on, I lost my Sunday morning composure entirely.

I've lost my Sunday morning composure with Mr. KoB playing Fela in the background, just when I was starting to seriously chill, ugh!

(11,833 posts)She's the first singer where I said to myself 'Self! This is wonderful!' I was lucky enough to see her at Carnegie Hall. She was very old (and I was very young) but I'll never forget it. She even did a hilarious impression of Elvis Presley singing like her. Cracked me up. She still may have my favorite voice. I love those witty sophisticated songs she recorded. The songbooks.
Oh, I love the Police too! 'Sending out an S.O.S...I hope that someone get my message in a bottle Ohohahoh!'

(23,867 posts)It just popped into my head is why I posted.
I'll tell you, I love Clifford Brown. He died at 25, yet still had a big effect. I mention it because when I think of Coltrane, I also think of everyone else, like McCoy Tyner, or Elvin Jones.
It all takes me to a place of peace.

(23,867 posts)One of my favorite trumpet vocal ballads. The writer I think was from the 30's, yet I get that 60's San Francisco feel. I can barely contain tears when Clifford plays.
Comfortable seat, lighting, turn off the phones, maybe a glass of wine if you indulge..... it is a masterpiece!

(8,709 posts)above, the reporter described the mood for the recording. Coltrane set the studio up as a nightclub to get the vibe just right

(11,833 posts)and I don't listen to it often for that reason. It's like my brain winds up in goop all over the floor. The Coltrane that I listen to more often is My Favorite Things. Standards done up jazz style. Congrats to his family that it's been added to this legacy - it's always nice seeing profound artists honored. Jazz & blue & rhythm & blues and all amazing music, I think is one of the most profound contributions our country has made & continues to make toward love in the world.

Funny, I just posted My Favorite Things above as my intro to Coltrane

(11,833 posts)Just got back from a beautiful pot luck dinner. Noticed the synchronicity in this thread. Minds blown, sharing Ella, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, My Favorite Things. Music transcending time & space. Good vibes in here. I'm in a sentimental mood.

(8,709 posts)My brother and I can't listen to this together without actually singing along, so we played Sentimental Mood a lot. Gratitude for Ellington and Coltrane and Ella, Too!

Thank you, Laughing Mirror. She is an unsung hero

(4,185 posts)From the very first note, tears of joy. I have been listening to this since I first bought the record when it came out in 1972, and even though I came out of Baptist church, it was through Alice Coltrane that I discovered what spirituality truly was, and it was not religion. And it was through Alice I discovered John and his creation. But it is Alice's Love Supreme that makes me cry. What Beauty. What Love.
