Related: About this forumHarriet Tubman on $20 bill?
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Wednesday will announce a decision to keep Alexander Hamilton on the front of the $10 bill and put leaders of the movement to give women the right to vote on the back of the bill, sources tell POLITICO.
Treasury will also announce that it plans to replace former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman, the sources said. There will also be changes to the $5 bill to depict civil rights era leaders.
Lew's decision comes after he announced last summer that he was considering replacing Hamilton on the $10 bill with a woman. The announcement drew swift rebukes from fans of Hamilton, who helped create the Treasury Department and the modern American financial system. Critics immediately suggested Hamilton take Jackson off the $20 bill given the former president's role in moving native Americans off their land. Jackson may remain on the $20 bill in some capacity.
Lew told POLITICO last July that Treasury was exploring ways to respond to critics. There are a number of options of how we can resolve this, Lew said. Were not taking Alexander Hamilton off our currency.

(31,828 posts)I suspect the real joy would be in knowing that Ms. Tubman wouldn't care.
She could not care less!
If she were alive she'd probably say -
"You know blue_tires - that's real nice and all but you better get back to work. Work needs to be done! No lip. Just come on and get to getting something done!"
Then I - justanothergen laughs at you and she . . .
Whoops me upside the head and tells me "don't you know children ought to be seen and not heard and right now I don't see you doing much of anything!"
Because she was cool like that!

(5,902 posts)I'm not saying they should get rid of all the Freemason symbology or - least of all - George Washington. But something a little more cheerful would be nice.
Personally, I like this proposal for the whole lot (with good people on the front):

Yes, amazing indeed. I was surprised finding out during her extraordinary life that she was married twice. I've set aside time this weekend to re-watch A Woman Called Moses, realizing now that I know/remember little of her personal life.
It's really awesome to feel a connection to a paper bill just like photos of loved ones carried in my wallet.

Anyone who digs a little deeper will usually find seething resentment for those they think might be happy (whether or not it's actually the case).
Sad, really.

(5,902 posts)Thank you for that. Perhaps Sojourner Truth should be on the Ten; Hamilton, after all, was an agent of the British Empire who sought to sabotage the young United States basically by bankrupting it.

On the back of the bill?
Really, they don't deserve to be on the front, then the bill would only be worth $0.79 on the dollar!

Civil rights activist Harriet Tubman will be the first woman to appear on a US banknote for more than a century.
The African-American abolitionist will be featured on the new $20 bill, the US Treasury Department said.
Last year the Treasury announced plans to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 ...

Pretty disappointed about this Harriet Tubman news. As a white man, I sorta felt like money was "my thing."
Waiting for them to notice the Indian head nickel, and the Sacagawea/Susan B. Anthony dollar coins.
personally: I love the wording "WHY CAN'T THEY JUST CRAP ALONE?" Not sure what it has to do with money, tho
