Focusing on Rachel Roy Diminishes The Power Of ...

Over the weekend Queen Bey blessed us with the release of her one-hour concept film for “Lemonade,” a breathtaking album that, at its core, is a love letter to black women everywhere.

There is so much to unpack, from the images of the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Eric Garner silently holding portraits of their slain sons, to the Malcolm X soundbite that declares, “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman.”

And yet, despite all the intricacies and truths about black womanhood laid bare in “Lemonade,” an overwhelming amount of the conversation surrounding the video and album has hinged on speculation about Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s relationship and, more specifically, trying to identify a woman he allegedly cheated on Beyoncé with, identified in the song “Sorry” as “Becky with the good hair.” Well, if you’re focusing on Becky, then you’re completely missing the point. The point being: “Lemonade” isn’t about who Jay Z cheated on Beyoncé with. It’s about Beyoncé’s strength — and the enduring resilience of black women everywhere.

But one thing is clear: The vitriolic reaction to Roy and the focus on this drama overall says a lot about our tendency to make infidelity, betrayal, and sexual transgressions more about the “other women” with no mention of the men involved — and in Beyoncé’s case, no mention of the work she turned this very specific type of pain into. What’s more interesting: The fact that Jay Z may or may not have cheated on Beyoncé? Or the fact that she turned the pain of his infidelity into a breathtaking work of art?

“Lemonade” is a celebration of the resilience and the fortitude of black women, in spite of everything. “Lemonade” is an exercise in moving on.

Intuition. Denial. Anger. Apathy. Emptiness. Accountability. Reformation. Forgiveness. Resurrection. Hope. Redemption. These are the themes of “Lemonade.” And they are so much bigger, so much more compelling than “Becky.”

I like what she does, yes, making people uncomfortable. Katrina, now this...

“The most disrespected person in America is the black woman.”

I am about to give up on DU. The good peeps have left, AA is quiet. BOG silent, Hill supporters driven off the board. HOF left a long time ago. None of us have been welcome for a very long time. I don't post here much anymore. This place is ugly. It is BU now DU died.

I've been trying to find posts about "Lemonade" amongst friends and online acquaintances online since Sunday morning and this is the first I've seen. Understandably, most of the focus has been on the passing of Prince.

I love this HuffPo piece!

I stumbled upon watching Lemonade Saturday night. Hadn't heard any of the buzz, so I ignored it at first because the description said nothing about Beyonce or music. Then I clicked on, in the middle of it, and found myself watching it repeatedly over the next few hours.

WOW. WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW.

I have goosebumps just typing this out. I haven't wanted to buy an album in ages but this one I'm buying.

It was a stunning creation all the way around. POWERFUL. Whew.....so very powerful.

When I realized it's likely biographical to some degree, I felt I was privy to something very, very intimate, and recognized the courage and brilliance of Beyonce.

Then I saw the internet lose its mind.

Holy shit is all I can say. I've never seen anything like it.

All this Becky talk is so they don't have to talk about what this project is really about.

That's my two cents

i don't want to blame the other woman, but why on earth did she put up that insta pic? again, i dont really care about her, but it seems like she was courting this publicity. i'm irritated because it caused people to focus on an irrelevant persona, while in some ways ignoring a giant talent.

to clarify, i do not hold her responsible for the affair, but i do hold her responsible for jumping on the lemonade/beyonce fame to get ten minutes in the sun.
