The New Roots.

Anybody watching the New Roots this memorial day on the History Channel?

History

New ‘Roots’ set to arrive amid plethora of slave narratives

When the television miniseries “Roots,” based on the best-selling novel by Alex Haley, debuted in 1977, it was more than just a colossal commercial success — it was a bonafide cultural phenomenon that coincided with a spike in black American Afrocentrism and introduced a generation of white Americans to the true horrors of slavery.

The new reboot of the story, which is being co-produced by original series star LeVar Burton, is set to debut on The History Channel, A&E and Lifetime simultaneously on Memorial Day. It arrives amid national debates on racial representation and diversity on film and television, as well as in the midst of longstanding battles over the way in which slavery is taught in schools and portrayed in film.

The new miniseries also comes in the aftermath of “Django Unchained,” “12 Years a Slave” and the upcoming Sundance Film Festival sensation “The Birth of a Nation,” which for better or worse have made slavery dramas a veritable Hollywood subgenre. The first trailer for the re-imagining, which features recognizable faces like Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, and Laurence Fishburne, alongside newcomers like Malachi Kirby as Kunta Kinte, has the pristine look and historical detail of a big budget film production. But what can a new version of “Roots” offer nearly 40 years after it first pierced the nation’s consciousness?

1. No - here's why . . .

I've read the book - and I watched this on VHS about 15 years ago.

To me? The original can't be beat.

I don't know that I will get the same 'feeling' I did the first time - or when I read the book. Same with Queen. I wouldn't watch Queen again - because Halle Berry thoroughly broke my heart in that movie.

but as I've heard and read, there is a whole generation or two that know nothing about Roots. And "if we don't know our history, we are bound to repeat it".

I'm going to make sure that my grandkids watch, I know they've never seen it before. They only know Obama as the president but not how we got from there to here.

I read the Autobiography of Frederick Douglass when I was in high school and was destroyed for weeks. I tried to watch 12 Years a Slave last year and couldn't do it.

12. I had 12 Years TiVoed for about 3 months ...

I never got past the 45 minute mark (on more than 10 attempts). I, finally, deleted it last week.

While I have no love for Nick Cannon, I loved his comment on slave movies: "Damn a slave movie. I know we were slaves. You don't need to be showing that. I know we were Kings and Queens, too; but, you ain't showing me that!"

New Rule: For every "12 Years" movie, there must be a movie about Hannibal; for every Birth of a Nation, there must be a movie about Mansa Musa I; they put out "Queen", they must also put out "Nana Yaa Asantewa".

And, further ... They put out a movie about Bill Gates; they must, also, put out a movie about Benjamin Banneker or Dr. Drew.

of ignorant, fearful people who sense that losing privilege, entitlement and just plain worry about 'others' than them regarding skin color and culture. If he is allowed to become 'leader of the free world' we'll all be in a nightmare that won't go away for 4 maybe 8 years IF we make it that far as a unified country of states. And yes I agree with you, not all will deserve this racist fascist, but we'll all suffer even the deluded masses that will cast their vote in his favor. Had a neighbor go home angry the other evening when a few of us drinking beer and letting our conversation slip into the political realm. He started out on Obama being responsible for the transgender bathroom fear that they have been agipropped to believe. When I dared to correct him, he exploded with kids getting raped by transgender people and him having to fight off the advances of....well he wasn't using politcally corect terminology.

I let him rant, so did my other neighbor who also couldn't get a word in during the rant. He and I are of a like mind, WE WILL vote for our Democratic Party nominee, no matter who. And I said, f++k Trump, he's a destroyer, not a healer in any sense. My other neighbor agreed. My trumpchump neighbor stopped his rant, folded up his lawn chair, turned his back and went home. This is going to be a, undoubtably a very messy and long season coming up. Yeah I know, the chiors knows. And the chior is ready to sing loud and clear, Anybody but Trump.....;........I am singing already......

others who are different from us as positive, interesting, curious.

Devolved people see differences as concern and fear.

It is a very basic human evolution issue.

are proving everydday day every word you just 'penned'. The shift is amazing at how fast he brought this element of "devolved" cretins out of their swamp. I just hope their are enough rational, reasoning people out here in voterland to send them and their leader back to the swamp netherlands.

14. I am more interested in "Birth of a Nation"

I loved "12 Years a Slave"-, because, despite knowing the history, it was a very well made and artistically surprising film.

I read "Nat Turner" by William Styron a million years ago, and would like to see "Birth" because of this.

Of course, being white, I don't have the visceral reaction to these stories that many here would have. My black wife has shown little real interest in seeing "12 Years" though she knows it is supposed to be an excellent movie.
