#DangerousBlackKids: Black Twitter challenges the criminalization of black youth

Following Saturday’s verdict, on Sunday writer Jamie Nesbitt Golden kicked off the hashtag #DangerousBlackKids, with the caption: “Here’s [a] potential future threat to society walking into the living room” alongside a photo of her adorable young son.

It seemed to come as a direct response to the jury in the Dunn case failing to agree on a verdict for the first-degree murder charge he received for fatally shooting 17-year-old Jordan Davis. The jurors couldn’t decide whether the unarmed teenager provoked his own murder.

Within minutes of Golden’s tweet, Black Twitter was trending with photos of lovable children alongside sarcastic, and oftentimes witty, comments poking fun at the absurd perception that young black kids are a threat to society.

The pictures, tagged with #DangerousBlackKids, show everything from carefree kids enjoying the company of their family and friends to cute babies looking at the camera while lying on their beds.

Off to tweet a pic of my nephews!

Joining Black Twitter would be just about the only thing that could make me join Twitter.

I was a bit sick about the Jordan Davis trial. Yes, the asshole got jail time (THIS time) but the fact that they lessened his sentence and still considered Jordan a threat pisses me off to no end.

Hmmm . . .

Interesting from that article you linked:

African Americans use Twitter at higher rates than other ethnic groups. According to a 2013 study by the Pew Research Center, more than a quarter of all black Internet users are on Twitter. The same study found that 30 percent of Internet users on Twitter were between the ages of 18 and 29.

Those large numbers mean that a community has evolved online to reflect one that has long existed offline. The difference is now it’s out in the open for anyone to observe.

“For us, there’s a lot of barber, beauty shop talk,” said Jamilah Lemieux, digital news and life editor for Ebony magazine. “You see the dozens being played on Twitter. You see people looking out for one another. Someone’s child is missing, someone’s looking for a job, someone’s looking for an apartment. Then there’s some minor injustice that takes place: a journalist or a major outlet says something terribly offensive, we’re on the attack. Or there’s a grave injustice like Trayvon Martin’s murder or the death of Renisha McBride, we’re all there.”

I'm a bit older than the demographic - but I want IN on that sandbox.

And M0rpheus, considering how eloquently and brilliantly you communicate here, the idea of you not being around makes me terribly sad. The loss of your voice would be a HUGE loss to this place that has already suffered so many losses.

This place NEEDS strong black voices. And we've lost so many. Brewman_Jaxx (the creator of the Graphic Examples and Black History threads that were staples in the old AAIG forum) packed his bags and hauled ass years ago. And personally, I think the loss of his voice was a massive loss here. He was one of the smartest people on this board and he NEVER lost his cool (unlike me).

In fact, I remember Brewman sending me PM's about a thread where Skinner was trying to "heal wounds" between two various but overlapping groups here. Black folks and another group. I was trying to correct some really blatant BS when Brewman sent me a PM practically begging me to not waste my time and to stay out of that thread. He left not too long after that.

There are about 20 people that don't post here anymore that I miss terribly. We've lost some really major, really intelligent, sophisticated, worldly and FUN black voices ie Karenina who had been on DU since 2001. She used to come into the old AA forum on Du2 and rouse us awake if we'd been too quiet for too long. So I have been so glad to see that this forum has not died and that there are still people here kicking ass, taking names and looking damn good while doing so.

I'd hardly call myself eloquent at all, but I try to at least get my point across.
You, JAG, 1SBM, malaise and MrScorpio all have me outclassed, imho.
Now that being the case, all of you have helped me to get up off the sidelines and find my own voice, tone be damned.

I remember every name you've mentioned and I miss every one of them but, Karenina I miss the most. She was actually the first person to welcome me around here. I hate that we allow ourselves to be run off.

So, you guys are now stuck with me. I guess I'll just get comfortable over here.

I don't know what it was that ran Karenina off. I would love for her to come back but I sure as hell understand why she wouldn't.
