Lines I liked in a book...

Fiction is kinda empty tonight. A couple of lines made me smile. Gentle humor:

The secretary from Hell who can't be fired said that someone called, couldn't tell if it was a man or woman, might have been Russian or German. She said this never taking her eyes off her computer screen or looking at her employer.

Thora asked if they said they'd call back and Bella from Hell says she doesn't know because she cut him off by accident.

Thora: "Bella, whoever calls--a woman from Russia or a man from Germany, even a dog from Greece that speaks in tongues,--please put them through to me. Okay?"

A couple of days later, Matthew, a partner forced on Thora by a new client, calls her home--there has been no effort made towards friendship on either side.

Matthews says "Sorry to call so late, but it occurred to me that you might be thinking about me," Matthew said calmly after they'd said hello. "I decided to let you hear my voice."

Thora was flabbergasted--she could not tell whether Matthew was mad, drunk or joking. " I can't say you caught me doing that." She stretched over for the remote to turn down the tv volume so that he would not hear the trash she was watching. "I was reading."

"What are you reading?" he asked.

"War and Peace, Dostoevcky," Thora lied.

"Really," said Matthew. "Is that anything like War and Peaceby Tolstoy?"

I have pulled some real beauts when I was trying to act smarter than I am. I had to laugh at it too.

Sounds like the book I am reading----no great literature, but entertaining.

I'm a big Yrsa Sigurdardottir fan.

Bella turns up as comic relief in a couple of the later books, too.

Glad you recognized it--you should. You're the one who rec'd the author to me. My paraphrasing leaves a lot to be desired, and Yrsa probably would cringe if she read it....

Great to know she'll be around...

(That's one reason I love the Charlie Moon series....his Aunt Daisy is as cantankerous as Bella..)

Billy was movin’ some of Tom Chatham’s sheep down off the BLM section to winter pasture, and them little bastards clustered around somethin’ in one of the draws. . . . We got a cool one.”

“You didn’t see it?”

“No. Billy did.”

“Put him on.”

There was a brief jostling of the phone, and a younger version of Bob’s voice answered, “Hey, Shuuriff.”

Slurred speech. Great. “Billy, you say you saw this body?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“What’d it look like?”

Silence for a moment. “Looked like a body.”

I thought about resting my head on my desk. “Anybody we know?”

“Oh, I didn’t get that close.”

Instead, I pushed my hat farther up on my head and sighed. “How close did you get?”

“Couple hundred yards. It gets steep in the draws where the water flow cuts through that little valley. The sheep stayed all clustered around whatever it is. I didn’t want to take my truck up there ’cause I just got it washed.”

I studied the little red light on the phone until I realized he was not going to go on. “No chance of this being a dead ewe or lamb?” Wouldn’t be a coyote, with the other sheep milling around. “Where are you guys?”

“ ’Bout a mile past the old Hudson Bridge on 137.”

“All right, you hang on. I’ll get somebody out there in a half hour or so.”

“Yes sir. . . . Hey, Shuuriff?” I waited. “Dad says for you to bring beer, we’re almost out.”

Did anyone happen to watch any of the tv series based on these books? Natch, the books are better but they have done a good job with the first season of the tv series too.

Poke around on it a little and get a look at the cast. Season one premiered last June, so season two should be starting around the same time in 2013. It's on A&E.
