Family escaping North Carolina storms hit by thieves in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - As now Tropical Depression Florence continues to hammer the east coast, one New Mexico family escaped just in the nick of time, only to be hit by thieves when they arrived back in their home state. Althea Joe and her children made the trek from Sneads Ferry, NC to New Mexico last week.

Her husband, Henry, had to stay behind in the Camp Lejune area, where he has been stationed with the Marines for the last few years. When Althea and her kids drove into Albuquerque on Wednesday night, they stopped at the Golden Corral on San Mateo and Osuna for dinner.

After they finished eating, Althea says she came outside to see her truck was broken into. Her purse was gone, and so was a very important briefcase. "Briefcase contained everything that defined us. Our social security cards. Our birth certificates. Our titles for our vehicles," she says.

She says the manager of the Golden Corral immediately called police. KRQE News 13 asked police for an update on the case but have not heard back. The family posted to Facebook, hoping someone may come across the briefcase or the family's documents. If you find them, the family asks you to call 505-504-3937 or 505-450-2476.
