St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap hired as new coach for the Charlotte Bobcats

St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap was hired Monday as head coach by the Charlotte Bobcats, the school said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.

NBA sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard the Bobcats will make an official announcement Wednesday at a press conference in Charlotte.

Dunlap is a somewhat surprising hire because he has spent most of his career at the collegiate level, but he is highly regarded in NBA circles for his knowledge of the game.

A week ago, the Bobcats had narrowed their choices to Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan, Indiana assistant Brian Shaw and Lakers assistant Quin Snyder, sources said. After initial interviews with Charlotte executives Rod Higgins and Rich Cho, Shaw and Snyder were brought in last week to interview with Bobcats owner Michael Jordan

Only explanation I can think of for this.

since he is an assistant but from what I understand he is well respected around basketball circles for his knowledge of the game. Plus Sloan backed out.

I'm not defending the move as I really don't enough about him, but the Bobcats need players more than anything in order to win.

And this guy has no head coach experience, not even at the college level. He might turn out great, but given MJ's track record, I'd bet against that.

Won two Division II National Championships there.

As was a head coach for Division III California Lutheran & was a head coach for a pro Australian team that went to the "Grand Final" his first season followed by back-to-back semi-final appearances before Dunlap returned to the states following the death of his father. Whether that is good enough head coaching experience or not, just pointing out he does have head coaching experience.

MJ is a terrible basketball executive. He thought Doug Collins and Kwame Brown were good for the Wizards.

He is proving that w/ the 76ers. Kwame was a bad pick considering it was #1 overall.

Even with MJ on the team they didn't do much.

They were .232 before Collins took over then went .451 over two seasons then fell back to .305 the season after he left. But those two seasons were also the same years Jordan was with the team as a player.

All I can imagine is that no one else was desperate enough to want the job on their resume.

He'll need all he can get.

The Bobcats won seven games last year. But it was a strike shortened season and they could have reached double digits if they played a full schedule. Maybe.

He did a good job for the Red Storm stepping up when Coach Lavin was out with his medical issues. I'm sure he'll make a fine NBA head coach.
