Personally, I would keep the current BCS-rankings(w/ tweaks needed based on yearly reviews) and put the top 4 teams. The rankings are unbiased to things like ratings and seemed to do a decent job ranking teams it's just that a 2-team playoff was leaving teams w/ equal or almost as strong cases to be there. Of course there will be plenty of complaining who should be 4th but it still keeps the importance of the regular season intact and people complain about college basketball that has a 68-team tournament.
