Matt Cain to start for NL in All-Star Game..

National League manager Tony La Russa named Giants right-hander Matt Cain his starter for Tuesday's Midsummer Classic at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, a baseball source confirmed.

Cain, 27, recorded the 22nd perfect game in Major League history at AT&T Park against the Astros on June 13. That outing came amid a stretch of eight consecutive starts in which Cain recorded a victory. Overall, Cain is 9-3 with a 2.62 ERA and has tallied 118 strikeouts in 120 1/3 innings.

Cain's perfecto was the first in franchise history, and his 14 strikeouts tied Sandy Koufax's 1965 record for the most strikeouts in a perfect game.

The Giants' first-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, Cain also spun a one-hit shutout in his second start of the season. The three-time All-Star played a critical role during the club's playoff run in '10. En route to a World Series victory over the Rangers, Cain started three playoff games, racking up 21 1/3 innings while yielding just one unearned run.

Congratulations to Matt, this is certainly well deserved. Posey is starting too, which I'm sure factored into La Russa's decision. Hopefully, he will get Buster out of there before he's forced to scramble around after Dickey's knuckleball.

I did not want Posey to catch Dickey to start the game.

Hell, the guy is banged-up as it is. He should be home resting with his wife and kids.

in fact, I thought Bochy should have rested Posey yesterday, instead of playing him at 1st. Even Dickey, though expressing a desire to start, admitted it would be rough on anyone trying to catch his knuckler for the first time..

for those not used to it. Since Posey was voted in as a starter at the catcher position and hasn't any experience catching knuckleballs, it makes sense to have him catch Cain. It's not totally without warrant -- the Cain/Posey battery was responsible for a perfect game.
