Related: About this forumSo what do you think is the best Olympic performance? (Spoilers from today)
So Phelps is going to generate a lot of this discussion and as of right now, I don't know that I can think of a more overall multiple-Olympic performance.
But for me, the best single performance in the Olympics is Dan Gable. He won the gold in freestyle wrestling in 1972 without having a point scored on him. That is fucking INSANE. To dominate like that at that level is beyond impressive.

(22,340 posts)but I can't imagine how big the margin between gold and silver would have to be to equal not getting scored on in wrestling. That shit just doesn't happen at that level. Not. One. Point.

(22,340 posts)I'll give you that. 8 golds with 7 world records and 1 Olympic record.
I know this sounds petty, but if it were 8 world records, I would be tempted to put him above Gable.

(56,177 posts)I won't say anymore about it unless you already know the outcome.

(56,177 posts)The US women won by 5 points...that is HUGE!!!! Since we're talking about dominating performances, this is up there.

I've never seen a Russian team so off their game ... and so demoralized afterwards.

The lack of any significant error was he amazing thing about the US performance. That was as close to perfection as you'll ever see in modern gymnastics (the sport has advanced radically since the says of Comenici's "10" - her routine wouldn't remotely qualify for an Elite competition today).

(49,533 posts)But the poor performance of the Russians contributed to their margin of victory. As did poor performances by other traditional powerhouses. But Romania made quite the charge to get back into medaling. Too bad they didn't show any of that!

In this Olympics so far has to be that 15yo Lithuanian girl who won gold in swimming.

(22,340 posts)Greco-Roman wrestler from USSR. The Karelin lift is pretty damned impressive given his weight class. But he went 13 years undefeated in international competition and 6 years without having a point scored on him. People may remember him more for losing to Rulon Gardner in Syndney Olympics in what I think is the biggest upset in any Olympics.
