It wasn't spectacular but I'll take this Michigan win! Especially after three long years of agony under RichRod. Defense and special teams made the difference tonight. Go Blue!
And props to the Hokies for a clean, well-played game. They played their hearts out.
Still....yay, Michigan!

(27,813 posts)Didn't the Big Ten end up 4-5 in bowls? And the Wisconsin game was a pick 'em. That's not so bad!

(9,002 posts)4-6. We needed this one. With Hoke at Michigan and Meyer at TOSU things are about to get a whole lot better in the Big Ten. It comes down to speed of the defenses. Both these gentlemen realize this. Great win!

(9,709 posts)neither of these teams belonged in this bowl game. The third best team in the Big 10 against a school that lost their conference championship game by 28 points and they're both rewarded with a BCS bowl..what's that about?
I don't know what Beamer was thinking. 4th and short near midfield in a tie game, he calls timeout and then tries a fake punt. Did it ever cross his mind the Michigan coaches aren't idiots, for sure they emphasized to their players during that TO to watch out for the fake..and sure enough it looked like they were waiting for it..

Bottom line: both teams were in the bowl game regardless and one team found a way to win. That's what good teams do. Your Michigan Man 49ers coach has proved that as well.
I, for one, am thrilled with the win and thrilled for my team. Go Blue!

(6,278 posts)Since one of the chief functions of a bowl is to make money, arguments based on whether the bowl selected the two best football teams available are somewhat irrelevant. In a fair world, Michigan State would have been in a "better" bowl that Michigan, and Houston would have been selected over the Hokies. But we all know that the behind-the-scenes discussion includes TV ratings and which schools "travel well;" Michigan is a very safe choice on both counts, and Va Tech is probably more of a known quantity in football than Houston.
In the fairest world of all, we'd just have a playoff and all this grumbling would be moot.
In the world we have, there set the matchups, they play the games, we watch the ones we choose to and cheer for (or against) the teams on the field. In this matchup, Michigan prevailed despite getting pushed all over the field most of the game. Go Blue!
