Giants' Barry Zito donates $500 for every July 4th MLB K to veterans -- $109,000 total

Before the start of the San Francisco Giants game versus the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, the team’s Twitter account announced that veteran Giants pitcher Barry Zito would be donating $500 for every strikeout made across the MLB to Welcome Back Veterans.

14 games later – the Giants, Reds game was postponed due to rain – and 218 total strikeouts were made across the major leagues yesterday, meaning Zito will donate $109,000 to the charity, which provides care for veterans and their families.

The donation was also to honor his father, Joe, who died last month, according to MLB.com.

Zito has been active in helping military families. He founded the charity Strikeouts For Troops in 2005 with the goal of providing work and providing assistance for military veterans and their families, according to its website.
