Says that unlike any other team name, would you refer to a team by the color of their skin?

(20,365 posts)Look, no matter what we think, the rest of the country is OK with their name. It won't change anytime soon.
On edit: You're quoting Costas?

(64,933 posts)Yeah, it was also acceptable to use the "n" word at one time.

(31,204 posts)if he had any balls he would have been slamming this years ago. Not Bob ... he weighs in after even the President commented.
Its become trendy now to criticize it.. I think the name should be changed but I find the media people who are jumping on the bandwagon and refusing to say the name as well, showboating hypocrites no better than what Palin and Cruz did outside of the White House. Yeah, I don't like the name but I find censorship, particularly censorship to make one look "holier than thou" annoying.

but does it seem reasonable he'd comment on hot topics as I recall there was a lot being said about gun control at the time as the Washington name (where is this sudden interest coming from BTW?) is being talked about a lot?

I do agree that if he was seriously troubled by it, he would have mentioned it a long time ago or if he was then he waited until it was safe to do so.

(31,204 posts)a bandwagon jumper desperate to keep himself relevant. He plays it safe, waiting for the national discussion to be played out before he comments.
Where was he on the Plaxico Burress incident in 2008? Costas has held the national stage for years -- he could have been a hero.
Honestly, I don't know what role this guy is suppose to play. I do know his sanctimonious act is one of the most tired in sports.

(64,933 posts)is a racist name. At least TZ has admitted it is a racist word.
The Burress incident? Burress was a douchebag who shot himself. He had no intention of murdering 20 school children.

(31,204 posts)My issue is with Bob Costas, who commented on a national issue only after most risk had been absolved.
Regarding guns, I suggest Costas' national presence had given him ample opportunity to speak out in favor of stricter control long before the Belcher murder/suicide. Burress is one example out of many.
I've posted many times here my dislike for the name of the Cleveland baseball club and their racist logo. Same goes for Redskins, Chiefs, Braves, etc. I'm surprised and frankly a little hurt that you'd suggest I'm okay with this.

(64,933 posts)Costas has in regards to the two items discussed here.
I apologize for taking such a rough course in my response, but I think what Costas has done recently has taken a lot of balls. There is no one else in the sports world taking a stand on issues like Costas. Whether he is late to the game seems to be a moot point.
Did you really listen to Costas' comments? The names Chiefs, Braves, Indians are not racial slurs as "redskin" and "*i**er" are. When the names are a positive image of ancestry, such as Irish, Seminoles, Celtics, Bavarians, etc., there is less of an issue.
Is the solution to just name the team after an animal or a hairless nut??

(20,365 posts)Keith Olberman is nearly as bad, but he does it on purpose with a touch of tongue-in cheek.
