Deion Sanders says every team he played on, including the Cowboys, had gay players

Hall of Famer Deion “Prime Time” Sanders delivered a somewhat mixed but overall positive response when asked about openly gay NFL prospect Michael Sam on The Arsenio Hall Show this week.

Sanders said of Sam’s coming out, “I love it.” But then he unfortunately drew a comparison between homosexuality and drugs and alcohol. Sanders, who played on five NFL teams including the Cowboys, went on to say that all of them included gay players.

“I don’t condone nor do I condemn, but I’ve had friends, family members, and every one out here has someone of homosexuality in your family — and someone who’s on drugs and alcohol,” Sanders said. “How can I judge that? It’s up to me to give them love, to give them support, to just be there for them.

“He’s not the first gay guy in the NFL; he’s the first one to come out. Let’s get that straight,” Sanders added. “Every team I played on, there was someone. … We always knew, but he was cool. That was our boy. We had to look out for him. … If he can make plays, he can play the game.”
