Wichita State matches ’76 Hoosiers, ’57 Tar Heels at 32-0. Next up: Larry Bird

Unlike the last team to enter its conference tournament without a loss, Wichita State’s brilliant, undefeated season did not splatter unceremoniously once the postseason began. The second-ranked Shockers did not go wobbly in the knees, as then-No. 1 St. Joe’s did almost exactly 10 years ago, getting routed by 20 points in its 2004 Atlantic 10 tournament opener against unranked Xavier. No, Wichita State encountered Evansville in an Arch Madness quarterfinal on Thursday and did the routing, advancing to the semifinals with an 80-55 victory that had a machete-through-underbrush feel.

Wichita State is now 32-0, just the fifth Division I men’s team ever to manage that.

“What’s not to like?” Shockers coach Gregg Marshall said in a postgame television interview.

Precious little, at this point. Wichita State has matched the record posted by the last undefeated national champion, with Indiana famously going 32-0 en route to a title in 19776. North Carolina also won the championship with the same mark in 1957, while four UCLA teams went 30-0 and the 1956 San Francisco Dons, led by Bill Russell, were 29-0.

It's not like his team ever schedules any in-state teams the way, say, UConn always does.

1955–56 San Francisco Dons men's basketball team ended the season undefeated, becoming the first NCAA basketball team to record a perfect season.

San Francisco won two straight NCAA titles behind a punishing defense led by Bill Russell, who turned shot blocking into an art form. He was also better scorer than history gives him credit for, averaging more than 20 points in both championship seasons. In 1956, Russell had support from guard K.C. Jones and a balanced lineup...

This is a very good college basketball team and they may have a real shot at winning the whole ball of wax.
Now I wish to apologize to all of the fans of WSU because usually when I make a prediction, it's like a kiss of death.

They haven't done that since 04-05. 32-0 is impressive, but as E. Gordon Gee might say, they did it by playing the Little Sisters of the Poor.

.The Shockers earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament but were placed in perhaps the most difficult region in the history of the NCAA tournament.

The last part of that statement might be an exaggeration, but a majority of brackets will either have a surging and preseason No. 1 Kentucky team upsetting undefeated Wichita State in the round of 32 or Louisville beating the Shockers in the Sweet 16.
