(32,111 posts)to beat Nadal and Djoker - they just never manage to do it!
I also follow Ryan Harrison but he couldn't even get through qualifying - beat by Ward. So, there we are. Back to watching Federer.

(32,111 posts)Tennis: Li Na Ousted in First Round of French Open
By NAILA-JEAN MEYERSMAY 27, 2014
PARIS Late on Monday at the French Open, Stan Wawrinka, the mens singles champion at the Australian Open in January, lost in the first round.
Early on Tuesday, Li Na, the womens singles champion in Australia, joined him with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 loss to Kristina Mladenovic of France.
It is the first time that both singles champions of a Grand Slam event were eliminated in the first round of the next major, according to Roland Garros.
In my mind I didnt have any idea how to play the match, the second-seeded Li said.
Kristina Mladenovic:
Like both of them...I really thought both would get far...

Bad day for Williams sisters (By Kate Battersby)
When the draw for Roland Garros 2014 was made, no one failed to notice a potential third-round match-up between Venus and Serena Williams - but neither made it through. Even before the younger sister created the shock of the tournament by going out to Garbine Muguruza, Venus had succumbed to Anna Schmiedlova on Philippe Chatrier today.
Williams, seeded 29 here, looked to be on course for the sibling encounter when she broke early and took the first set from the world No.56. But Roland Garros has never been Williams happiest hunting ground her best result was runner-up to Serena 12 years ago and she has not made it through to the second week since 2010. The odds were against her, not least because (a) she turns 34 next month and (b) her first and second-round opponents here had a combined age of 36. All the same, Schmiedlova did well to take control of the match. The 19-year-old is clearly on her way into the top 50 very soon. Venus saved two match points but Schmiedlova took the third with a backhand as authoritative as it was stylish.
The No.12 seed Flavia Pennetta also went out, to Johanna Larsson. The Italian seemed in control but Larsson surged past to take it 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. But the No.8 seed Angelique Kerber progressed without too much drama. Varvara Lepchenko gave her a second set test before the German came through 6-2, 7-5.
(By Dan Imhoff) Williams has ensured Roland Garros is without its top two seeds in only the second round with the defending champion crashing out in a straight-sets boilover to Spaniard Garbine Muguruza under heavy clouds on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
The world No.1 could not find rhythm on her usually dominant serve, winning just 55 per cent of first serve points and a mere 27 per cent on the second delivery in the 6-2, 6-2 defeat, throwing the top quarter of the womens draw wide open and marking the first time in the Open Era the top two seeds in the women's singles have not reached the third round of a Grand Slam event.
It marked the first time Williams had bombed out in the second round of a Grand Slam since losing to sister Venus at the Australian Open 16 years ago and the four games she managed to salvage was the fewest she had won in a major in 288 matches.
Murguruza, who first turned heads back in January where she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, cracked an impressive 60 winners to 40 off the racket of Williams and committed just 18 unforced errors to her opponents 29.
In what was tipped to be an all-Williams third-round affair, Muguruza will now face Slovak Anna Schmiedlova after the world No.56 earlier upset big sister Venus on Court Philippe Chatrier.

(32,111 posts)It's always nice to see some new talent rise up (unless they are taking out Roger in the first round!)
Still cheering for Christina!

TBF
(32,111 posts)they are fun to watch.
Taylor Townsend, Sloane Stephens, and Alison Riske still representing - Sloane's the only big name from this group
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I think Maria will now win it, or someone who sneaks in and surprises us, like Schiavone did that year.
TBF
(32,111 posts)there are still several contending veterans. Stosur won her last match easily.

(29,723 posts)I'm sorry, I just can't tolerate her grunting......HATE IT. So.....any American will be great for me to root for..... Or that cutie Anna Ivonivich..... (and I'm sure I spelled it wrong), but she's a pretty good player.

(72,790 posts)Venus has been up and down since her illness, so it's not really that surprising. But, Serena? I'm stunned. My two fave players on the women's side gone.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Actually, I thought he'd have to face Stan, and Stan's game is good for clay, the long rallies...of course, he didn't show that the other day!

(72,790 posts)It happens.
GO RAFA!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Since winning the Aussie he seems to not enjoy the spotlight...he was an also-ran for a while, then breaking through changes things.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)I was waiting for Stan to finally break through. But I also thought that he could be one of those that wouldn't be able to handle the pressure.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I hope it doesn't last, though.

(32,111 posts)She is 18 & being coached by Zina Garrison. I think we have an up and comer here!
PARIS (AP) -- American teenager Taylor Townsend reached the third round of the French Open in her Grand Slam debut by beating 20th-seeded Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Townsend is ranked 205th but earned a wild card from the U.S. Tennis Association based on her results during a series of lower-level tournaments this spring.
Now she's the youngest U.S. woman in the third round at Roland Garros since 2003. Next is a match against No. 14 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
Woot woot! Go Taylor!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Can't do that now because it's all about power...they need to be at least a little older now.
TBF
(32,111 posts)she was my very favorite! She was only 15 when she made it to the semifinals of the French! Steffi was young, Martina Hingis, Chris Evert, Tracy Austin. The game was different then ...
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Actually, the rules were she couldn't join the tour until 16, and then she was limited to the number of events...looking back, that made sense when so many of them got burnt out starting too young.
a kennedy
(29,723 posts)The more finesse game.....Stephie Graff, (mrs. Andre Agassi) was my all time favorite. All out power is cool, but the athlete with the "shots" will be the winner MOST times. JMHO.
TBF
(32,111 posts)no doubt about that. Golden Slam
I just liked Gabriela. You know when you're a teen and want to be like someone your age? I'd go out and hit tennis balls at the garage for hours after watching her play! She was beautiful, athletic, amazing ... but I agree that Steffi was the best and I think she could definitely give some lessons to these girls today who just hit as hard as they can with no thought of slowing down to slice sometimes etc.
MuseRider
(34,135 posts)and she looked really good out there. I like her manner, at least what I saw was that calm but determined way the real good ones have. If she has the talent with that she may be a new player for the US.
I am not getting to watch much until next Tuesday, I hope she is still around by then.
I also hope Fed is still around. I did see a little of his match today as well. He looked good, I could not watch enough to say more.
Stan Stan Stan. That was sad.
Not sad to see Serena go but stunned to see it happen. I AM sad to see Venus go, I hope she keeps with it and climbs back up. I always enjoyed watching her game.
Go FED!
I am over and out probably until mid week next week. NOT happy about this but it is what it is and I am going to be having fun one of those days, driving all the others. Long drive, I sure wish this was the US Open and maybe there was a Satellite feed to listen to.........ah well.

TBF
(32,111 posts)... on to Round 4!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)then lost it...recovered nicely to easily win the next two, though.
Radswanka is out...I wonder if this is the earliest the top 3 seeds have been out in a Grand Slam...willing to bet it is.
TBF
(32,111 posts)has happened in the open era:
"On Tuesday, the No. 2 player, Li Na, lost to 21-year-old Kristina Mladenovic, so the top three seeds are now out of the womens draw before the fourth round, the first time in the Open era that has happened at Grand Slam event."
They discuss Gulbis in the article also - he did win but he has yet to fulfill the expectations everyone had for him. At age 25 time is getting away from him as well.
Here's the article --> http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/31/sports/tennis/french-open-tennis.html
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)But you really need to have a major win by 23 or so, I think, and then build on that or you don't have the confidence, and like it noted, it starts to slip away.

(32,111 posts)and agree completely. Gulbis should be good but he seems to be another Marit Safin (crazy).

(72,790 posts)I dislike Fed.
TBF
(32,111 posts)you are a fan of the fraudulent Rafa Nadal! lol
Well, Rafa may add to his trophy tally - unless Djoker can beat him. Murray, Raonic, Berdych - these are all players capable of winning a major I think. Raonic is at that age where he could be a factor like Gulbis overpowering Roger.
MuseRider
(34,135 posts)None of the hotels I was in covered this. I did hear about Roger last night
Gonna check in on Ferrer since nobody has mentioned him then it is back on the road again.
I guess in one way it is good that it has gotten down to mostly players that I really am not going to want to watch much since I get home late tonight and have house guests on Thursday. No time this year.
Thanks all for this thread that caught me up.

(77,097 posts)If Novak wins the title, he will have earned it the hard way.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Gulbis is tearing it up...Raf-fraud should be garteful he won't have to face, only in the final, or Gulbis will wear Djoker down and the cheater will win the French again...no one on his side of the draw that is any good.
TBF
(32,111 posts)sexist pig. All that aside he has A LOT of natural athletic talent. I know he has the ability to beat Djoker if his nerves don't get the best of him. Maybe even the unbeatable Rafa!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)What a putz!
Petkovic through to the semis!!! YES!! I like her!
TBF
(32,111 posts)maybe we have a candidate who can beat screaming Sharapova! I will cheer for her too!
Sharapova advances to the final with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Bouchard.
marmar
(77,097 posts)...... Go Halep!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)If she wins, it won't be the end of the world, like it will be if Raf-fraud wins...Halep winning would be nice, always nice to see someone new win it all.
TBF
(32,111 posts)Screamapova may well take it though - she won the French just a couple of years ago. I think I hate Serena more but it's close.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Although Gulbis would be the only newbie...and quite frankly I think Djoker has a better chance against the Roider.

(34,135 posts)that I as actually looking forward to today and tomorrow no matter who played.
Now watching Sharapova/Halep and the stupid TV station has it Flood Advisory graphic over the scores. When CBS had the tennis coverage I called them on some actual Severe Weather graphic that was far more likely than this advisory and they moved it by the time I hung up the phone. I have no idea what the score is Now that I am back on my computer I can catch it up but damn. Does anyone at these stations ever think?
cpwm17
(3,829 posts)a local TV station cut completely to thunderstorm coverage. They stayed there for a long time. I was staying in some dorms and I heard screaming in a nearby dorm at that moment.
MuseRider
(34,135 posts)if it is bad enough to warn for but this was a flood advisory, not a warning or a watch but an advisory and they did not move it until the advisory was cancelled...during the last part of the 3rd set. I was going to post something about their lack of care for their viewers but their FB page does not allow you to post. Figures.
Funny that you heard screaming. I imagine if my neighbors were even close they would have heard some choice screaming from me as well.
