http://deadspin.com/blocking-the-plate-rule-screws-marlins-mike-redmond-st-1614363370Watching last night's game and I could not believe what I was seeing. Cozart was called out (he was out by a mile) and then the Umps wanted to have an Umpire Review. Why?? Cozart didn't attempt to slide. Cozart never touched the bag. Mathis wasn't blocking the plate (until he went after the ball). Such a bad rule

If you look at this video you will see that earlier in the game the same play occurred. McGhee was called out on the left. Cozart was safe on the right. Right?!?!

(3,163 posts)Line the teams up on the sidelines with game controllers and let them have at it, with the fans in the stands watching on a gian screen. Players can scream invective at each other and make angry hand gestures but may not touch other players. That will put a stop to all these horrible injuries.
It will kill the sports, too, but who cares. We just care about safety.

(14,689 posts)Just terrible. If I were Redmond I'd have pulled the team off the field in protest. Even the HP Umpire, Mike Winters, appeared to disagree with the reversal.
That scumbag Cozart didn't even try to slide. For the team that employed Pete Freaking Rose to pull that sort of punk move is beyond disgraceful. I have to believe that Reds management is telling players, when they know they're going to be called out, to wave their hands and hope for a miracle from the New York office. And that's exactly what happened there.
Today, MLB came out and defended their interpretation of the rules. The Marlins announcers made a good point on the broadcast tonight. 3rd Base coaches should just send everyone in a close situation and hope for chaos to ensue at HP and try to win the game on a technicality. The Reds should be ashamed to "win" a game under such dubious circumstances.
The way things are going, MLB should just make any play at the plate be an automatic force play. I know they are trying to protect the catchers, but injuries to catchers are so infrequent. Ten times more pitchers have catastrophic arm injuries than suffer the fate of one Buster Posey.
