ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders owned the 12th-best rushing offense in the NFL in 2013, but they have come nowhere near that this season. In short, Oaklands ground game has been a disaster.
The numbers are staggering.
Heading into Sundays game in San Diego, the Raiders are 32nd in total offense and in rushing. Their 18.3 rushing attempts per game are the fewest in the NFL since at least 1932, and Oaklands 62.1 yards a game on the ground are the lowest in the league since 1946.
Offensive coordinator Greg Olson had no single explanation for why the running game has disappeared, saying a number of different factors have figured into the rapid decline.
Darren McFadden, signed to a one-year deal in the offseason, leads the Raiders with 372 yards on 105 carries and Maurice Jones-Drew -- slowed by a hand injury early in the season -- has been a big disappointment with just 64 yards on 29 attempts.

"If it was one thing I think it would be easily solved, but its something each week that crops up," Olson said. "We kind of simplified during the bye week, and weve simplified more this week. Until we get it right, until were able to execute on a regular basis ... we just havent clicked or found that yet this season. Some of the opponents have something to do with that. But when you look at it, I think its more been us. I think the players would agree with that as well."

On paper, they shouldn't be playing this bad. They have some solid players on the D.
Auggie or other Raiders fans, I sat through years of terrible ground games -- I couldn't imagine seeing worse. I hope they turns thing around for the fan's sake.

(16,113 posts)Moore and Burris have been pretty good. Watson and Bergstrom are backups on a line that struggles to run the ball (though the pass blocking has been good). Hayden is a 3rd corner.
I'm not saying the last two drafts won't turn out well, but I think it's too early to declare victory on them. At the very least, you shouldn't see any "Heyward-Bey" type picks anymore. If they take Winston or any RB next year as the first overall pick, you'll know not enough has changed.

(5,103 posts)I work with them and am related to a few.
It's not even enjoyable to tease them. That would be cruel.
All of them lack any energy or belief that things will get better soon. Maybe an ownership change?
The ghost of Al is still around, mucking things up? Ain't that right Marcus?
League wide though, there is an imbalance and a general lack of competitiveness. Take MNF and TNF!
Please. Take them.

(31,174 posts)He was hired to coach the O-line before being named interim head coach. He still coaches the line.
Maybe he and Olson changed the approach -- made some adjustments, new assignments, new plays -- and the players haven't adapted yet, or can't?
I don't the have time to follow the Raiders (and Browns for that matter) as closely as I'd like. We'd all agree this is the lowest of the lows, so it can only get better.
